i do not recommend this show out of respect for the author.
after i watched this piece,i was lost. by looking for answers, i've read the former writers' friends talks about the life of the authors.
cat gruel is the last piece of work i will see from the original authors.
at first, i thought this was an intricate piece to show other who have been bought in to their own culture narrative. eat, drink, pee pee, poop, cycle of life, distinct judgements, morals, decisions and bonds.
japan becoming; a singular culture.
many grew up in an environment which adjusts to them and therefore adjusts back.
the few who are
...
able to know their own situations, in reality, are either very bitter or very content.
in many ways i can almost guess why she drew these pieces.
these stories/drawings were never meant for others to see, "i showed to my friends for my guilty pleasure and people liked them...?"
"now i can not stop myself" for a reason... a good one at that; the excuse i base around i needed to make a living like everyone else, perfect. this is the, possibly, one only climax in my life, to spread my thoughts to others for my own pleasure.
NOBODY nor EVERYBODY "WILL FINALLY KNOW HOW I FEEL".
a very emotionally charged selfish person perhaps, who loathe their own existence.
these pieces were never meant to be shared.
maybe only for a few who visually could see her in person and acknowledge her bitterness.
the intention was an intellectual jeer intended to create a meaningful connection that was special, personally.
cat gruel seeped through many natural motives that most of us inherently took for granted but in many way an idol of obfuscation yet to be marked for the author.
everything came at a cost where in cases there are no control over; even the self.
life with string attached similarly to the flailing bird; only to substantiates desire of others.
the stew is served crammed, supple and unnaturally together. either a mistake or a bad joke to deny a natural order to serve a function.
Cat Soup shows the obvious noose around individuals whom desperately tries to ignore. as the rope tightens, only then, life reveals itself a bit too short.

the interpretation of art will differ from one to another. to be honest if Sansha Sanyou/SS were presented any more serious(ly) i would not be here writing this review.
first things first-
there are no real plots;
aside from character development by acknowledging each other developed later on, the main focus are the three characters' perceptions and their SOLE reactions.
I am not a big slice of life fan but if i understood SS correctly, SS meant to reflect our own lives through comparison of the anime itself. this is interesting because most of us fail to appreciate the life we been living in.
one second let
...
me get requirements out of way
story - none
art - B+
sound - okish
character - very well developed and crafted
enjoyment - very
overall - one of the better shows
since everything else was boring i will be mostly only talking about the characters
when was the last time you had a 3 set meal dinner with [friends], nah try just by yourself, before sun down and while enjoying the sun setting, smelling great food and able to relax in a sated mood at home. while fresh air cools part of your house and temperature drops as you finish dinner and get ready to jump into a warm bed, never to worry about opening your eyes until you are ready to.
i mean, what does that mean to you?
i mostly enjoy drama and some mecha animes but this show is SCARY
all the characters are actually at their worst but presented at their best, they all would be consider depressed people, i guess this is where all the tropes arose from that most other reviews talked about.
for me
in a way SS the show itself was guiding me to laugh AT the flaws of characters not the comedy aspect where more or less i was suppose to respond to.
from what i understand, the writer completely understood what part of the psyche each character represents and each time i laughed presented that flaw to me in person.
teru- one of the saner characters, a sociopath who cannot afford to be happy, feeds on depravity of others, like most people have their own angels and devils
youko- a fair person in pursuit of own personalities & interests e.g save money, mayo. that is what i guess they are trying to convey to the viewers. a fair person.
futaba- an air head with good heart, mostly represented as a good mother figure cleans and excels at home economics
hayama- teru sister, a health nut of the sort, very polite, a psychopath have the need to be center stage, omnipresent on screen.
kondou asako- the logician that understands everyone but never speak up, very bright, probably too smart that is why she is always neutral but preobably depressed.
nishiyama- she would be the polar opposite of youko, childish youthful and everything from feminine to moe never grows up
sonobe- a 30 year old maid, very mature and shamless. reaching to end to prime years is not a thing she like to acknowledge
yuu- ambitious pre-teen who lacks attention given from his mother and attached to youko
hajime- blue hair male unable to control teen testosterone who lacks attention from father or peer groups finds relief in challenging futaba
sasame- young girl with no role model finds a moral compass with youkou-senpai,
usada sakura- cousin of futaba, attracted to yuu's money
probably the most sick of all, this preteen planned her life and sealed her own fate before having a childhood. probably was forced to grow up fast or very ambitious.
yamaji- because this is japan we are talking about, a super multifunctional tall man servant stalker that looks pretty; tells you all about ladies needs.
there is a super nasty little episode at the beginning of episode 4 with 3 ladies having luncheon.
if you made this far and not seem surprised i applaud you, you probably understood this piece of work better than me.
like i said,
the interpretation of art will differ from one to another
thanks for reading

Oh my FReaking god!!! There haven't been an epic like this since... Code Geass yes...
This series have been a great run from begin to end. Man oh man where to start ...
the Agony, Dedication, Drama, Thrill, Tension heck even the fanservice as a part of the story connected SO well it is worth watching. (although I wish there were more male character screen time)
normally I do not write reviews but seeing how this have less than 10 reviews and only 2000+ watches is just unbearable.
Story- 10/10
The story is relatively simple in the beginning and takes a complete BARRELROLL YES A BARRELROLL from
...
standard environment to dramatic experience to standard environment in less than 2 eps, which, constructs the plot. However, it doesn't end there. (not gonna spoil)
The only bad part I seem to dislike is the character development is very short lived. However, considering in an anime like this only in 13 episodes it is superb.
as i finished this series I thought this was like somewhat like "Sweeney Todd" everyone have a motivation in the beginning and then everything falls apart till there is nothing left. ( I wish there was a manga series for this i'd be all over it :)
Art- 7/10
I am more of a story fan but the art of the main heroines is neatly neatly animated; however, the supporting character doesn't seem to get the same treatment lol no doubt. But the Mecha's especially, I thought they did really well with the motion and movements with streaks and such. Overall throughout the series the art done its part and I'd call it very well done but not amazing.
Sound- 8.5/10
Usually I watch the OP/ED once and skip right to the series and that is exactly what I did here lol nothing special with the OP/ED. but as for some parts of the animation there are BGMs that fits the scene nothing spectacular though. Overall the sound was good; not too impressive though. I would love it if the main heroine had a more dramatic tone and would speak or think more throughout the show.
Character- 10/10
I would not like to spoil this but the focus is mainly on the main heroine some of the supporting characters that surrounds her which was superb. Other characters like the crew on the ship was really far off, there was no sense of fear in their tone and they are not hesitant but we are not suppose to focus on that neways XD; the antagonist also have his own story (Ralph Werec) which was absolutely amazing. OH and the bullies!! they pulled a fastone there .
Overall I enjoyed everyone, they all have their own problems and some are not willing to share it.(Aren't they nice or what?)
Enjoyment- 10/10
I walked away once just to go to the restroom, came back, finished all at once.
BoyOboy, if this were a painting, then the paint would be mere sadness itself the brush would be Drama with a tail full of Thrill. I simply loved the story! not to mention the weird techy stuff was also intriguing as hell... loved the idea with the Baxter Gate, it made me think so much about the time travel I've seen put in pace with reality. Overall I enjoyed it, did you?
Overall- 10/10
See for your self :)
