I'm writing this review from the standpoint a trans woman who reaaaaally sees this as unintentionally relatable at time, or wish fulfillment. I know a majority of people are not this way, and that's perfectly fine.
Onimai means a lot to me on an emotional level, it's primarily what cracked my trans egg all the way in 2018 when there were only a few chapters released. I read it in a hotel room at 3am, and promptly forgot the name of the series a week later. Forward to 2022 where I see a gender-bender anime get announced with a name that keeps poking in the back
...
of my head "hey I think I know this." Read the synopsis and go "oh shit, its this" and promptly add it to my plan to watch. I watched the anime air on the day it came out. For the most part I was kind of disappointed. A few months later (when I'm writing this) I decide to read the manga and see if my vague memory was right and that I would like the manga more. And it was right, the manga is much more fun to read through because at least in the parts that make me uncomfortable (because I'm an adult now and not the same age as a transformed Mahiro as I was the first time I read this) I can skip through it faster than an anime. Overall I really enjoy it and will probably actually recommend the manga to other people, unlike the anime.
