I have one golden rule when it comes to reviewing anime and manga alike, which is to never give a score before the series is finished, because there's always a chance it will go to shit
but im willing to break that rule when it comes to this manga, because it's just too good
the story starts off kinda uncompelling but it builds as the manga goes on. the art is also super detailed and very satisfying to look at. it's just so good.
as for the characters in this manga? ohhhh they're so good man. the main characters in this manga are interesting and well developed. Nazuna
...
is quirky and serves well as the foil to our MC, Kou. while Kou is kinda edgy and gloomy and Nazuna is bouncy and full of energy. Kou is pretty straightforward with what he says but Nazuna can't talk about love without blushing like crazy and that dynamic is really funny sometimes. and since our boi Kou is literally still a child (he's 14), the decisions he makes, and then the reflections on those choices make for really good writing.
the side characters also bounce off really well with our main characters, they're well developed, and are pretty realistic; or as realistic as you can in a vampire manga. since the setting for the entire manga is during the night, characters can shed their uptight "daytime facade" as shown with the MC's homeroom teacher. this style of writing gives our side characters much more depth without excessive writing.
I'm not really good at writing reviews and im trying my hardest to write this review without spoiling anything so just go read the manga it's really good 10/10 so far
(I really hope I dont have to come back and rewrite this review)

Don't let the high score fool you it's full of dumb people leaving reviews before they even finished the season, its..a premature review if you will. (why do people do that? you say this season is a 10/10 after only watching 4 episodes? what the fuck?)
(edit: I need to mention that im not a hardcore re zero fan. they'll probably notice more slight details and foreshadowing. I didn't notice them since im a more casual fan of re zero. if you're more on the hardcore side then skip this review I guess, you won't really like it)
this review will mostly be spoiler free.
where do
...
I start? for me, this season was fine, it's wasn't great or anything but I was so invested in the previous 2 seasons that I felt obligated to finish this one as well.
the problem is return by death. it's a very interesting plot device, and it was implemented very well in the previous seasons, but when you start abusing it, thats when you mess up. plot lines end before they start, Subaru dies so much you barely care anymore, and everything just gets messy. the plot this season became super convoluted for me so much that at times I didn't even know what was happening. I think if you watched this season from beginning to end without breaks in between, it would make a lot more sense, but since I followed it weekly, I couldn't really remember everything that happened in one episode (they do pack a lot of shit in one episode, as I mentioned above, due to the abuse of return by death) (I was also following other animes at the same time so thats also another reason why I can't remember everything that happened)
I don't have much to complain about other than what I mentioned above. the returning characters were good, the new characters were good, the voice acting was good, as well as the music and sound. the art is consistent, and (I just have to mention this) the decision to skip the op and ed is such a good idea. I don't need a op and ed every episode, this way you can pack more meat in one episode too. I'm glad that my nagging suspicion of roswaal wasn't wrong and the rick-and morty-vat-of-acid plot was very nice
this review might change once I get the chance to rewatch this season in one go, but until then, 6/10

this anime started off so strong and I had such high expectations....
this is not a bad anime by any means, but the drop in story quality when you compare the first half to the second half is so drastic I simply can't say this is a great anime.
the good thing is that while not every episode was a banger, every episode is 3 minutes so even the lower quality ones won't overstay their welcome, and I say lower quality but they're all still good episodes, just not as good when compared to say....episode 3 or episode 4
I wouldn't say its a must watch but you
...
definitely won't regret picking this anime up and you definitely won't have a bad time watching it. would recommend.

spoilers below, tl;dr on top
tl;dr: don't watch unless you have a lot of free time and don't care about plot because you're just bored. its not good entertainment, it's more of a good distraction
review:
this anime is whatever. the concept is stupid but the story's not boring, the characters are interesting to some degree, and while the romance doesn't really go anywhere its still the more interesting aspect of the story. the jokes get a chuckle from me here and there but there are some misplaced jokes, shit could be going down or two people having a heart to heart and you have some dumb joke
...
forced in. it was going to be a solid 5, 6 from me until the last 3 or 4 episodes.
after third of a quarter in we have the inevitable boss fight. we have the main bad guy, or girl in this case, amou. and everything about her is just so....fucking stupid. I want to start off by saying that the voice actor for amou sounds like she doesn't want even be there, her voice acting is so bland and monotone. this is seriously the first time I had a problem with a voice actor because it was just bad.
so what about her character? also bad. the anime established early on that she's a badass, even the five swords are afraid of her. we also know that she has a grudge against MC, never given a reason why, we get the occasional snippet of the past, where we see MC and Amou fighting sometime ago, so maybe MC humiliated her? that would make sense right? well the reason why amou hates MC is because:
HE MAKES FRIENDS WITH OTHER PEOPLE.
in this flashback, in MC's old school, apparently MC befriended amou first and amou was like "omigosh he's so handsome I think I'm in love" but next thing you know he makes friends with someone else and amou then beats the shit out of him (or her someone said it was a trap I dunno for sure) in front of MC, which then leads to a full out brawl involving 40 people.
back to the present, ms yandere goes on a rampage until she gets stopped by MC. I was expecting some sort of dragonball shit since they're both op as fuck but they just kinda punch each other out like a rocky Balboa fight, until she just gives up because...love I guess?(facepalm) and then she leaves the country, MC gets fake expelled, and the anime ends.
there's other shit that you can't just explain with "anime logic" but amou was the biggest problem for me.
such a shame would've been an average anime had it not been that dumb antagonist in the end, would not recommend to anyone who values good plot and story telling. its not good entertainment, more of a good distraction, something you can put in the background while you work on other stuff, look up and get a laugh or two before going back to your what you were doing. this anime is for people who like transformers. anyone who says this is a 10 is a fool don't listen to them the voice acting alone should knock down a point.

this is going to be a mostly spoiler free review:
tl;dr: season 1 is better if you're judging solely on comedy, but as an overall season, season 2 wins in a landslide. watch it its good
season 2 still has plenty comedy, along with amazing character development (Ishigami) and characterization (Shirogane), as well as better story arcs in my opinion. it also manages to introduce some good additional characters (Miko, Osaragi, Papagane) and give them good backstories. side characters don't overstay their welcome and the main characters are outstanding in their roles. the voice actors do a great job and the animation is on point. the subtle
...
ways the animation conveys the feelings and perspectives of the characters are great, this season is truly a masterpiece. it really outshines the first season from start to finish. this anime succeeded on more than just making you go "oh haha that's funny"
go watch this season you won't regret it. this is coming from someone who used to think anime and romcoms are stupid. if this can win me over it can win everyone over
10/10
(enjoyment I ranked 9 because like I said, the comedy wasn't as good compared to season 1 I have to be honest)
(possibly slight spoiler starting here)
the ending of episode 12 with the throwback of season 1's opening and ideals(I'll make him/her confess his/her love to me) was a very nice, no, great touch, I give them plenty points for that.
