Very good science fiction that doesn't pull any punches and trusts in the viewer to be able to put the pieces together. Very well told and conceived - outside of things like psychokinesis, even the science used is within the realm of abstract possibility. Character deaths are often abrupt, but never happen without furthering the plot and making deliberate points. Everything seems to be in service of the underlying story.
My only complaint, and the thing that kept me from fully enjoying the show, is the main character, who is as bland as stale Wonder Bread. Characters continually mention how amazing she is, but
...
even they have a hard time coming up with any reason she would be amazing. "I guess I would call it strength," they say. But Saki is often the first to break down, and is more often than not the most cowardly and useless person in any situation.
The supporting and antagonizing characters are much more interesting, with Squealer and Kidoumaru being prime examples. In the end maybe that's the point.
Shinsekai Yori is a largely unheralded gem of modern animation, and is well worth a watch. Ultimately, it's a story about how to know when you've lost your way, and a cautionary tale that we must always protect the core of our humanity, which is in the end what all great science fiction is about.
