I'll just get this out of the way, I absolutely love parasyte. I'm very bias when it comes to this show. That being said, I know it's not perfect; it has its flaws. There are two maybe three characters that I would say are genuinely interesting and not trope-ish, them being Migi and Reiko. I say maybe three because even though Shinichi is not the most interesting or well written character, his development throughout the series is. But all the other characters don't have any fully fleshed out character traits aside from "being friends with Shinichi" or "being in love with Shinichi", that kind of

thing. And while this definitely doesn't seem like it, I don't think this hurts the show much at all. Yes, I know almost nothing about Kana as a person, I don't even remember what her last name is, but I would be lying if I said I wasn't extremely moved and sad when she died, and even more so when she showed up in Shinichi's dream in the last episode.
And yes, the art is kind of bland looking and definitely doesn't compare to some of the greatest looking anime, but this sort of things almost adds to the experience. I'm not sure how I would react to a from of Parasyte with animation on par with Your Name, Mob Psycho, or OPM (just some ones that came to my mind). A sort of rough around the edges look to it makes the images of people getting their heads eaten off more palatable in a way.
The way that the story builds and flows into these immensely emotional scenes with so much weight makes it ridiculously satisfying as it goes on. Seriously, the show will have you freaking out and overflowing with excitement just because the main character cried. And the way this show treats character deaths definitely surprised me. It took me a whole episode just to come to terms with the fact that Shinichi's mother had died. I didn't have any special connection to the character, just that I thought that it wouldn't kill the main character's mother just a few episodes in. That death was almost a warmup for Kana's death. I knew that characters in this show die, no matter how important they are. So when Kana was pierced by another parasite, I didn't deny it like I did with his mothers, because I knew that it was real. It was one of those times where you just sit back in your bed and think. Those occurrences happen a lot in this show.
Finally, I'd be remised if I didn't mention the OST. I know a lot of people don't like the dubstep which is fine, but to me it gives a feeling that these fights are really to the death. Having an epic orchestra or rock song playing in the back would definitely make these exchanges more hype, but the underlying message would be lost. An intense, sometimes stressful song playing really reminds you that they're one wrong move away from being gone. And the music during the emotional scenes never fails to give me chills. "Next to you" basically does this by itself. I swear they play it like three times an episode, but still whenever it plays I can't help but just start to care and feel for whatever is going on, and whenever I listen to apart from the show, the same feelings come rushing back.
I know parasyte isn't for everyone, the violence or gore for some people definitely is a deal breaker. But to me, it's absolutely beautiful and one of the best
