The anime is amazing, the message it brings, the plot, the criticism in it, it's a very inteligent anime, well developted one for a short serie. I always wanted to see a direct action anarchist anime, because I feel japanese culture is so reactionary... It brings a lot of reflection and is not reactionary as I was expecting. Again we have an anime like Death Note, where there's not an clear enemy, like in a maniqueist heroic logic. [SPOILER] We have the ones who puts bombs being the main characters, what was amazing, and then the enemy they fight is the police (A.C.A.B!!! <3 ),
...
and the game is between the police, the detective, the anarchists genius boys, and then appear another genius, that's another victim of the system as the Sphinx group. That was all amazing and they kept the expectation all the serie along.
What is the thing that I think that ruined the anime: the misoginists tropes. I was all happy seeing an anime about bombing the government and fucking the system, and then there appear some heterosexual romantic shit, and an enemy who is a bitch that works with the police of USA, and what happened about all the exciting beggining of the anime?
I was very disappointed at how they showed the few women characters. I saw some sexist fanservice happening, and I think inteligent animes don't need this shit. And the Lisa character we don't get to know. She is portrayed very desempowered, fragile, and stupid, and she always ruin the plan. This sucks, we get to hate the women characters. Why don't they develop or show her story, make her stronger? She is portraied cleaning and doing housework while the genius boys do hacking, programing and build bombs...
But then they show a genius woman. But she is a bitch who works with the enemy but she is a lunatic who doesn't care and wants only to play, almost a psychopath. And what? She was a intererting character, but we don't get to know her story unfortunately. The women characters just appear to annoy, fanservice or to die without explanation or motive. She was a baddass who just did all that to kiss the boy and they suicide. WTF? When will Japan awake from this patriarchal nightmare? I am ashamed of them since I am a fan of anime! Why don't they grow politically on representation debate??
Also the Five, even if she was intriguing, why she has that Femme Fatale look? Why not a tomboy as she was when a child? She was showed as a child all the anime but we know nothing about her at the end.
I just wished there was a manga serie that I could read the story better developted.

Yuri on Ice is a good anime that will be fine for people who are not searching for some deep, psychological stuff, or mindfuck anime. It is not a dramatic shoujo, nor that kind of deep and depressing psychological anime, it is not philosophical, and it is not an action anime.
It is a fluffy anime, that will work well for those searching for humour and a light show to see. And even if it is not heavy, it doesn't mean it is superficial. Instead their characters have an humanity that is treated with lots of sensitiveness and reality.
What is new about YOI? The anime
...
is not simple fanservice even if it brings the relationship in same-sex couple. It's innovative in diverse aspects.
It is one of the firsts 'shonen ai' who do not stereotype homo affection and fetichizes gay relationships in very poor manner. I really felt that I was FINALLY watching to a real gay relationship, not a fetichized and unrealistic one that we see in shonen ai and yaois, that have almost all of them the same story and clichés.
Specially I was admired that I was finally seeing a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP in same sex couple in anime and maybe in media in general. Even with the age gap, it wasn't an excuse for domination and submissive dynamic. Instead, the older one stimulate the younger into his development and empowering, helping building his self-steem instead of the abusive dynamics that we see in shonen ai couples. Also, that difficult to show a clearly visible couple with lots of sabottage to consumate any affective stuff in the show, we don't see in YOI. It's clear that it wasn't totally uncloseted their relatioship, they don't have very physical contact (but instead, we see lots of care, some affection touching, not sexual ones, we see a significant RELATIONSHIP in gestures that show lots of deepness between them both, without the need of compulsive explicit exposure it is showed in a more delicate way). Even though, inside the story and for anyone seeing it, yes, it was very clear that they were a couple, that they developed a relationship, that they loved each other, that they become more and more reciprocating theirs feelings, that they become engaged, that they were together and schocking people with that, that they didn't care to be visible to the entire world only with attitudes, not necessarily with words, and it was beautifull, inspiring. The attitude of Victor to respect the timing of his lover, the attitudes in this relationship, it was admirable, we need to much these referentials, these inspirations, we need so much to see beautifullness and to find interesting and sexy the respect, the consent, the igualitarian dynamic, the caring, the no-sexualitzation of the other, the multiple ways of loving someone beyond sex like being by its side, sharing your knowledge, accepting the other the way it is, trying to understand, to grow together. Victor had everything to exercize power, but he didn't choose it. He choosed to puts by the side of the other, to not occupy a place of prepotency. His position as an goldstar, a great athlete, his age and experience, his beauty, WAS NOT AN EXCUSE TO EXPLORE, to manipulate the other, to use. Instead he engage in a relationship to help the other to grow and discover himself as a potent person too. He waits Yuuri timing, he don't pressure, don't bully, don't invade, he don't RAPE, as we unfortunatelly see in a lot of yaois. He is never abusive! It's an incredible progress! Finally some representation of a healthy couple, healthy sexuality. Yuuri has his own time to enter this relationship and to reciprocate Victor feelings, Victor never pressure this, he respect the process of the other. That is what captivated me in this show, that's what made this show being a loved one for me. It shows good relationships, of friendship, he has ethnic diversity, it is not misoginist, it doesn't exclude women from an only-boy fujoshi fantasistic universe... He shows a good relationship between men, without abuses and game-playing, so the show helped toward non homophobic representation of gay desire and relationships. And it doesn't mean they are perfect as a couple, that they don't fail in this relationship... we see their conflicts. And we see they work it trought. It was what made this show so special for people among other things.
Some fujoshis may cry that there was not sex between them and other stuff to fetichize, but I find that this mantained the quality of the show, bringing attention to what really matter. I think that it is great anyway to show physical contact between same-sex couples, but I really think it was a strategy for not turning it empty in a sexual stimulation for some public. It makes you pay attention to the story, to the relationship.
And if you want to relax your mind, see this show. It doesn't have an amazing plot, but it can be very good in it simplicity.

I find it one of the most amazing yaoi mangas I've read, along with 19 days from Old Xian. Because it breaks some cliches heteronormatives stereotypes of yaoi that I long so much for their fall for more humanistic representation of LGBT couples in mangas. I loved the art above all, the atmosfere, it's beautifull, and how it shows the issues the characters struggle like homophobia, sorrow and loss of somebody to death, self aceptance, sexuality, developing a relationship, dealing with normativity pressures, family bonds, work, the person in it's culture and how they negotiate with that... Is so deep, and also so delicate how
...
it treats it, not in a dramatic way, always with sensitivity, even if it treat psychological themes and some dark themes it is not a heavy mangá, ir mantains the beautifullness of life in each panel, is always very delicate how it bring these issues... is amazing, realistic, human. It's not dramatic, nor tragic, it is about reinventing one life, about two persons who create a new life together. The story, the art, is beautifull. I am waiting for the other volumes to see the issue of sexuality, I hope that they will be a reversal couple because this heteronormative dynamic in yaoi is so oppressive and we need other representations... It is amazing because it shows both characters discovering their sexuality together, in an egualitarian and consensual way, and even it is yaoi labelled, it is because it shows sex, but the story don't develop because of it or for showing it but because it is part of their life and of one's life, specially we don't see how a non-straight couple works out this and how deal with it, it's surronded by invisibility while straight people know what to do in first time sex with someone. It shows the development of intimacy between two boys where one is struggling to accept himself as gay and it has blocked the living of one's sexuality in fully manner, and the other never tought that would fell in love with a guy. It's a courageous act to break taboos. There is an openness on the side of Mio to live this experience without judgment but for his boyfriend it's complicated to fell free being intimate to someone due to all the hurts of homophobia and feeling 'not-normal'.
It is amazing that the character Shun say he is gay, this word, and got out of the closet for the family in a public ceremony. And there is no misoginy. Is the first yaoi were I see a LESBIAN COUPLE, who are friends of the gay couple! And the women aren't mistreated, the ex is now their friend and help the relationship and recovering family ties. The manga shows the promoting acceptance of homossexuality in a japanese traditional family and the recovering of this space.
I guess the chapters of the continuation of the history are still being released and translated... I find their sexuality very consensual also most of time except for some stuff that can be problematized. It freaks me out the normalization and eroticization of problematic and oppressive patterns of affection and desire yaoi and I try to rescue the good works that we are able to find. And surely this is one of these good works that need to be recognized.

This anime had a great plot, but unfortunatelly they missed a lot in not developing Nezumi and Shion romantic relationship, that was the great thing in this anime, I didn't get the point in mantaining their relationship that closeted if the anime had assumed it since the beginning. Animes are still homophobic unfortunatelly and LGBT audience still gets bad treatment.
