Both anime take place in a high school setting. The male protagonists from both series start from episode 1 with a well-known reputation at school as a mean delinquent among their classmates. It takes a few episodes before their classmates begin warming up to them. Typical stuff found in other high school anime are also present such as cool teachers, swimsuit fanservice, and school festivals. Not typically found in school life/romantic-comedy anime, are fight scenes. The short fight scenes are scattered throughout each series in order to advance the plot. However, the main draw to these series are their comedy and romantic bits. Both series find the right balance for each. Since both series are romantic-comedies, you can expect to see some romantic bits, intertwined with some comedy. In some anime, it's made pretty clear early on who the final pairing will likely be...not so in School Rumble or Toradora! Love triangles are found in both involving the male protagonists which will keep you guessing who the final pair will be. The randomness in their 26 episode run helps keeps the series from going stale.

Both anime series are romantic-comedies with a harem feel to both. Both male protagonists are at the university age, who through unique circumstances, ends up living with numerous pretty girls (or a harem of girls). A harem at the start of both series, it's made pretty clear early on to the viewer, who the fated matched couple in the end will likely be.

Fanservice, pretty school girls, with comedy anyone? That's what you're going to get out of these two 12-episode anime series. Every episode is packed full with funny comedy bits mixed well with plenty of ecchiness (panty shots, half-naked pretty girls, harem, perverted jokes). Since there's no full-frontal nudity or on-screen sex, neither can be called hentai, though Green Green does it best to push what is not hentai to it's absolute edge. The comedy bits, when executed correctly, were extremely funny, but only if you've understood the hidden adult-themed double entendres behind them. The fanservice in both series are a big part of what makes these series fun to watch, and doesn't at all feel misplaced.

Both are "mainstream" animes, popular not just in North America, but worldwide. They're both shounen anime, so you can expect a lot of action and fighting. If you like one series, there shouldn't be any reason for you to hate the other. What matters in shounen series are the quality of the action and fight scenes, and both provide lots with seemingly no end to be seen.

Both series are produced by the same anime studio, BONES, with roughly the same number of episodes each (50 E7/51 FMA). Both shows delve deep into their main characters pasts, and develop them nicely throughout their run. There are no cookie cutter characters to be found in either series, as each character is made out to be unique, with clear character designs for viewers to distinguish one character from another. They're also both fantasy adventures, with rules and powers unique to each series. The bgm/ost for both fit amazingly well for their respective series. If you're looking for something epic to watch, E7 & FMA are definitely two series you should consider trying.

The male protagonists in both anime are "hikikomoris" (recluses) that start out with similar troubles differentiating their self-delusions in their heads with the reality surrounding outside them. Both meet and make new friends throughout their respective stories. The male protagonists in both anime gradually move on from their reclusive tendencies, and near the end, despite lingering fears and doubts, are somehow able to both muster up the courage to save the day.
