**NO SPOLIERS**
The best word I have to describe Kamisama Hajimemashita is ridiculous. It is extremely comical, heartwarming, unrealistic, and a joy to watch. That being said I really love shojo, supernatural/ayakashi, and romance anime and if you don't like any of those things this probably isn't the best show for you and the few low ratings it's been given I'm sure are coming from people who may want something more realistic/slice of life-esque which this anime is absolutely not. I have read what is released of the manga and watched the anime completely (OVAs included) and it is one of my all-time favorites.
Overall this
...
anime is a 10/10 and I gladly rewatch some of my favorite episodes when I need a pick me up.
Now to reviewing the elements...
Story: 8/10
The reason I gave this an 8/10 was because it sticks true to the manga for the most part, there are definitely elements that couldn't fit into an anime adaptation (especially for the first season) and there were a couple aspects that were rushed in terms of following the manga. However, the general story follows the manga.
Art: 10/10
I think the animation was really beautiful and used to enhance the story and characters as depicted in the manga making an anime adaptation success in my book. The character design was completely true to the manga and the use of bright colors throughout the anime really brought the whimsical nature of the manga to the screen very well.
Sound: 10/10
THE SOUND REALLY WAS THE SELLING POINT FOR ME ON THE ANIME. I am a sucker for good sound design and Kamisama Hajimemashita hit it out of the park in this aspect. The music used in the scenes are modern interpretations of traditional music and traditional instruments which fit the nature of the anime very well seeing as a major part of the story is bringing traditional elements of living in a shrine to "everyday" life. The opening is cute and fits well, the song choice definitely isn't one of my favorite openings, but sound isn't all about openings and closings.
Character: 9/10
The characters are hilarious, very individual in their personalities which make for hilarious interactions-- just as it is in the manga. The development is slightly rushed in the beginning, however not unusual for a season of 12 episodes. I love Nanami's character because she is realistic as a high school girl despite not being a normal high schooler whatsoever-- When Kurama is introduced the fangirl aspect made her character more relatable as a high schooler. Tomoe's character is so opposite of Nanami-- responsible and decisive that again it provides for hilarious interactions between them. The rest of the characters I love and I felt somewhat attached to them as I continued watching. The characters themselves are 10/10 but the slightly rushed development is what made me knock it down to a 9/10.
