Two episodic soft sci-fi shows made by Sunrise. Both set in space. Both about down-on-their-luck space mercenary types getting into misadventures that rarely pay off. Similar feel and mechanical design.

Two violent OVAs with deceptive aesthetics. Alien 9 looks like some sort of cute slice of life/mon show, but it ends up getting about twice as dark and weird as Neon Genesis Evangelion. Apocalypse Zero seems to be nothing but perverted grimdark ultraviolent schlock, but at heart it's an idealistic homage to Kamen Rider with black & white morality and an impossibly noble protagonist.

Kidou Keisatsu Patlabor

Redhead tomboy cop protagonist who's obsessed with her giant mechanical vehicle. Part of a schlubby police department that tends to cause more collateral damage that it prevents. Sound familiar? You can basically think of the whole Tank Police franchise as a more crazy and action-packed version of Patlabor.

Both lighthearted fluffy comedy/drama/action OVAs. Both are forgotten pop culture artifacts of the 90s that sum up a lot of Japanese media trends of the decade. Both are surprisingly well directed and animated despite their cutesy look.
