I can’t trust mal ratings anymore. I get it if you think this show’s pacing is abysmal (I watched the first season on 2x speed, second season 1x speed), but what is the difference between this show and a show like eminence in shadow? Both shows are harems and don’t take themselves too seriously. Really the only difference is the main character in one show is cool and the other is pathetic. Is that really enough for a 1.5 point difference between the two?
That’s how I feel many people rate shows these days. Having this show as one of your favorites is not a
...
cool look. So pathetic character who is a pervert who pays for dates = bad show. Power fantasy = good show. I’m guessing a lot of us guys relate more with the former and don’t want to relive that. But I don’t think Kazuya’s character is enough to overwhelm other aspects of the show.
This show has surprisingly good comedic range (comedic faces, comedic situations, etc), and the punchlines aren’t exaggerated like the typical anime comedy. There were at least a few moments where I laughed out loud. Compare that to anime that are supposed to be funny but where I just have a slight smile on the entire time (ex. Nichijou ep 1, Kaguya, cromartie high school), and this show exceeds expectations.
The waifus are decent to high quality too, though I’m not a hentai watcher. Chizuru seemed like she would be the typical tsundere to me but her character has a lot more range than that. Mami is best girl no explanation needed. Ruka showed up in an annoying manner but I’m starting to come around to her. Sumi is just waifu filler as of now.
Ignore the patheticness of the main character and his seemingly unlimited wallet and this show is also one of the better romances. Why I’m more interested in seeing the main couple get together than some student council presidents. I’m not in high school anymore. At this stage I can relate more to Kazuya’s struggles and Chizuru just gets better with every episode. This show has some good romantic moments in S2.
What else? The setting of this show is unique. It brings something new to the table which is what a lot of people look for in rating something high.
I admit my tastes are not that refined okay. I’m mostly looking to be entertained by something after an exhausting workday. But I just think more grandiose shows just get overrated by default. Oshi no Ko had one great episode and the pacing has been arguably as shit since then. And I like it I’m caught up with the manga. But because the main character is cool (or at least looks cool) and it has some grandiose murder mystery which hasn’t been touched it’s 2.2 points better than rent a girlfriend? That’s some BS. The waifus are comparable in quality too.
So this show is not so bad it’s good. It hits on setting, characters, comedy and romance. It’s just good. People are calling it cringe while binging 2 seasons of it.
