The movie exceeded my expectations with excellent cinematography and direction. Everything was perfect, the music and soundtrack (Yuki Hayashi, you madlad!), the animation and the story telling. The fast pacing kept everyone inside the theatre on the edge of their seats. People were cheering and screaming as the characters arrived one by one. Claps resonated within the theatre with each point, and everyone sat down till the end credits scene. Now, there will be SPOILERS below so refrain from reading further if you don't wanna get spoiled.
I had already read the manga prior to watching the movie, still I decided to rate it 10/10.
...
Below listed are the reason's why:
First and foremost, Kenma's POV for the final point of the match. ABSOLUTE CINEMA. A guy behind me exclaimed, "OMG this is great!" Kenma bumping into Lev while blocking, him falling down, his face reflected by his sweat on the ground, and the ball slipping from his hands to end the match, everything was awesome. The POV was animated so well, I felt Kenma's exhaustion within me. I read about people complaining about how this way to end the match was underwhelming, but that's how Furudate decided to end it in the manga. Even Kenma didn't want the match to finish. So the match ending while all of them were enjoying to the fullest is the perfect ending for me.
Secondly, the DUN (BOOM) jump. It was so well animated. I waited eagerly to see it in action, even rewatching the fanmade animations on YT many times. When all hope's lost, we can always count on Lord Hinata and King Kageyama to save the day. Kageyama saying "FLY", and the flashback to him saying "And when you make those jumps, you hear the sound of your feet kicking off the floor" served as the perfect build-up to the epic moment. And Hinata becoming free from Kenma's cage with the jump was portrayed so beautifully.
Next, Hinata finally achieving his target- making Kenma say "It was fun" or "It was a hard loss". The whole theatre went crazy when Kenma smiled and said "This is so much fun..." (Hats off to Yuki Kaji for the brilliant voice acting here). Everyone cheered when Hinata was the sole person screaming his lungs out while the other players looked in bewilderment. And Kuro being the first one understanding why Hinata was so happy and him laughing was the icing on the top.
Then all of Kenma's inner thoughts as the match goes on, it's like he's playing 3D chess lol. Everyone audibly gasped as Kenma sent the ball over at the perfect spot to trick all the Karasuno guys and take away the first set. It really brought him forward as the main character in this movie. And then there were the interactions between Kuro and Tsukishima. The flashbacks with the two of them made everyone cackle, especially the switch between Kuro and Bokuto's hairdos XD. And once again everyone went crazy for Tsukki when he gave that gorgeous laugh.
I think at some point everyone was supporting both the teams, since the whole theatre went 'Nooooo' when either Nekoma or Karasuno lost a point due to a mistake after a long rally. That's something really difficult to achieve with a movie, when every anime watcher (atleast here) came to see Karasuno win, and the fact that the movie succeeded in achieving it is a testimony to its great story telling and direction.
Yes, I was sad that some of the important scenes from the manga were not included in the movie (like Nishinoya's foot save, Tanaka's jump serves etc) but let's be honest here, we all knew that it was going to be a 1.5 hours movie, and for an anime that usually invests 8-12 episodes per match, it was evident that scenes were going to get cut. But with whatever they could fit within this small duration, I feel it was perfect. The most important scenes were animated as they are in the manga, and they made the movie really enjoyable. After coming home, the not-included scenes came to my mind, but instead of making me sad, it amazed me how I didn't realise about them being missing at any point during the movie. This, again, acted as a strong foundation behind my rating.
Thanks for reading all the way till here. Those who are yet to watch the movie, I hope you'll enjoy it to the fullest.
