I genuinely loathe this anime, and it has little to do with the supposed yaoi overtones within it. Let's move on with this.
NOTES NOTES: This is speaking ONLY for the anime. So don't click "Not helpful" because you've read through the manga and/or find horrible inconsistencies with canon past episode 6, which is where I dropped it.
Story: 5/10
Well, it starts off nice, with a good dark theme going for it, what with all the demonic butlers and children dead set on revenge. And for a while, it was worthwhile. Then comes episode 6, the introduction of the Shinigami, where it steamrolls itself downward. At this
...
point I dropped it.
Art: 6/10
Well, it's a decently animated bishounen wonderland. The coloring is pretty good, and the Victoriana theme is actually rolling along fine.
Sound: 4/10
There wasn't really anything notable about it, so meh.
Characters: 1/10
I'm going to try to pack some very angry stuff in a lot of words, kthx. This is going to be pretty comprehensive, yet not very long for individuals.
Sebastian: Pretty okay concept turned into this retched Gary-Stu. He's too prefect in every thing ever, and wants this kid's soul. Oh and he's a demon.
Ciel: Kinda an asshole kid hell-bent on revenge. He crossdresses or something and people like to ship him with his butler.
Finnian: Dumb unfunny attempt at comedic relief.
Maylene: Dumb unfunny klutz attempt at comedic relief.
Baldroy: Not really notable unfunny attempt at comedic relief.
Tanaka: The normal, not funny/speshul butler who winds up being a failed attempt at comedic relief.
Madame Red/Angelina Durless: woah woah waoh a female who plays a role in the plot until she is killed, in the climax of the Jack the Ripper arc.
Damian: First episode and that's it. Nothing special other than he decides to attempt to con Ciel. And fails.
Elizabeth Middleford: The moeblob. Oh, she winds up angering Ciel too, but Sebastian is all like "I'M TOO COOL FOR YOUR RAEG, BUT I'LL MAKE IT BETTER".
Lau: The token Chinese mafioso. That's it pretty much.
Aleister Chamber: He's a perv who attempts to sell a crossdressing Ciel. He's an uberbishounen.
Undertaker: A Shinigami, but that's only in the anime. He deals with dead bodies and whatnot and has a pretty high bishounen level.
Lord Randall: He has sideburns. THAT IS PRETTY MUCH HIS PURPOSE
Azzurro Vanel: Like Lau, but without the chinese. He sells drugs too. Also, he winds up kidnapping! What fun this is, because it's basically the first arc!
Ran-Mao: Lau's assistant. Just kinda hangs out for a while.
Mary Jane Kelly: Could very well provoke FEMINIST RAEG with the things that happen to her.
William Spears: A Shinigami, who's always frowning. He's a supervisor who winds up having to baby the next character...
Grell Sutcliff: Another Shinigami. Basically an insultingly campy gay with a chainsaw. If an anime could be ruined by one character, this would be it. He's pretty incompetent when he's first introduced, and continues to be. The only reason the fandom likes him, from what I can tell, is that he's gay and/or MTF. And that's a pretty stupid reason to love an annoyingly incompetent character. Oh, and he's got some definite Stu going on, because he screws the rules pretty hard while with Angelina. His voice actor makes it worse.
Shinigami in general: Two words: Anachronism Stew.
Basically, I really, really loathe this anime. The fandom does not help at all either. If you're into Victoriana themes and art, and have a callous disregard to plot and characterization, you're going to LOVE this. Otherwise, go watch something else. It's for your own good.
