Very similar in my opinion. Campy, gory, sexy. Unexpected character deaths, betrayal & backstabbing at any given moment. Plots that don't make a lick of sense, but extremely entertaining anyway. For a special breed of anime fans.

Zenaku no Kuzu

So many things in common: agonizing torture, brutal combat, seedy underworld, genital mutilation! Even down to the same tricked out suit with embedded blades. Ichi the killer is way more unique and disturbing but The Scum makes for a great follow-up read.

Land Lock
|
Extremely similar! New law gets passed in a semi-dystopian Japan and a bunch of outcasts get sent to an island. Some infighting occurs among the survivors and the protagonist is lawful good in both manga. Landlock is much shorter and to the point but also has some mild supernatural elements. Jisatsutou has better story but uneven art. Landlock has this really uninteresting parallel story but otherwise a thrilling read. Either way, two extremely similar manga and big recommendations for survival fans!

Route 20

Excellent cyberpunk world building right from the first chapter. While Gunnm has an extra concept of "distinct societies", the world outside the big city is a dump in both cases. Route 20 doesn't really get violent like Gunnm does... but both feature exposed brains!!!

Jigokuren: Love in the Hell

"Humans in the demon world" makes for a good setting. This is the case here, with a huge serving of comedy and ecchi. However Blood Lad has an overarching plot whereas Jigokuren is a bit more self-contained with basic continuation across chapters.

Badass main character and an (initially) wimpy sidekick go on a quest in a lawless world. Amazing bloody battles with a touch of cyberpunk and mystery. Needless is quite ecchi however, also much longer.

Igyoujin Oniwakamaru
|
Parasyte is a masterpiece and does not need much introduction, but Igyoujin Oniwakamaru is underrated IMHO and although it probably has more in common with Devilman, I still think the recommendation stands. In both cases, the protagonists get "infected" and once they come to grips with the situation, they gain impressive battle powers. Not that they have a choice anyway, plus their worlds start to crumble down. The host and foreign entity eventually collaborate and even start to understand one another. Oniwakamaru ends abruptly whereas Parasyte somewhat drags on. Both titles are gory but Oniwakamaru much more so.

Bakudan
|
Both feature teenagers boxing their way to the top, although Holyland mixes in many other martial arts as well. Bakudan is extremely hot blooded and doesn't mess around with dramatic arcs, but the denouement is rather rushed. Holyland spends a lot of time developing characters and delves deep into teenager angst instead of just exploiting it.

Damned
|
Gunnm and Damned both take place in a dystopian world which clearly separates people of lower and upper castes. Both feature extreme violence, gruesome decapitation and share similar sci-fi elements, although Gunnm takes that last aspect much further. Damned is a much shorter read and won't confuse you with endless arcs.
