Myself; Yourself is a dense and subtle anime. The story revolves around a boy who returns to his childhood hometown, and his renewed relationships with his old friends.
Have you ever heard a deadpan joke before? A statement that you took seriously, was given fairly seriously, but there are hints that it's a joke somewhere? In Myself; Yourself, what seems like cliche is actually subtle parody. That's not to say that it doesn't conform to genre. the anime are when Sana falls on Hinako. The first time you see that, you think it's corny cliche. The third time, you should understand it's parody. This is also made very clear when "anime blue" and company appear.
This is a mature anime. It's not rife with fanservice or bad language or lewdness. But it touches on trust and betrayal and jealousy. On love and pain. On dealing with hard times.
The plot in Myself; Yourself isn't always in front of you. It's in the periphery. Your understanding of events and conversations that happened earlier in the story will change as more is revealed later. An example of this is Syusuke's answers to the questions Sana brings him from Hinako.
This is an anime that, when it is done, benefits from some post-viewing pondering. As you begin to walk back the cat, these elements of peripheral plot and parody show themselves more clearly. This show also has a high rewatch potential (especially given it's length).
Myself; Yourself is worth watching (maybe even twice!).
