Baited by car racing. Show turned into BL.
While there are racing elements, it's minimal, there are multiple episodes you never even see a race car, instead you get listen to the bitching of a photographer. The car parts are not bad, but it's not worth it as the rest is garbage, and unfortunately the non car related episodes are the majority, there are like 3 short races.
I've tried to give this one a chance but it just keeps missing, I should have dropped it when it was clear they don't want to focus on races.
The CGI is not bad, but I wouldn't call it
...
good either, though it's probably more to do with directing, Initial D early seasons had absolutely horrible visuals, but still managed to look good. The art is ok, though I personally dislike this style.
I don't think I would have picked this up at all if not for it pretending to be about racing.

The first movie has a new scene, if I remember correctly, at the start that ties into a new scene at the end of the second movie, but it's nothing important, you can safely skip both movies.

There are also scenes cut, but since the original series wasn't very consistent. it's covered on this front. It might be even better this way as the only thing this show has is nice art and sound and flashy fights

Retarded cringe.
That about sums up the anime. *spoilers*
The concept could have worked if it was comedy, you are watching an incompetent senile old man trying to become a superhero, and sure enough the show is comical, but for all the wrong reasons. It's simply laughable how off are the ratios of the people the villain kills and how much the old guy manages to save, and he is acting like the typical low class office worker, bowing to everyone, constantly apologizing and ask for someone else to solve his problems for him, because he can't even take that much responsibility. He pathetic and it's disgusting
...
how he acts most of the time, and the show makes him out to be jesus. The villain is far more likeable, even though he is also a shit character, at least he is somewhat relatable, because unlike the mc, he acts like a human being. Let's be honest here, who gives a fuck about a bunch of randoms dying (if they are not cute girls)? Except for the random killing and torture to make him out to be the villain, and somehow not understanding why people don't like that, his motives are perfectly fine. Most other characters barely get screentime or do anything important, they are merely there as tools to show how good or bad the main characters are, which is another bad thing, since instead of showing it, we get people telling us what to think. They also suffer the common case of being retarded for the sake of plot.
The story is garbage, extremely clichéd. And even though it's tagged as sci-fi, it's not. Nothing is ever explain, not to mention it conflicts with out current understanding, so it might as well be magic, there is nothing scientifical about it. As for the psxchological part, it is trying at least, but also failing, the only thing it ever brings up is about what it means to be human, and the mc and villain are the two sides, but it's left as that. It tries to be deep, but it is very shallow. Emotional scenes get fucked up by either intentional or unintentional funny inbetweens. In the last episode there is random part where the dog falls down on the stairs while the MC does the self sacrefice.
Art is good. That is the hand drawn parts are. There are some problems with distorting faces too much to convey emotions, so some scenes that are supposed to be emotional turn out to be funny, but most of the time it is good looking. The CGI though is horrible, it just pops in and stands out so much it's distracting every time.
The OP and ED are nice, but nothing special.
This was not an enjoyable show, you get the morals of the author pushed down your throat, with a very childish take on what a human is and tricks to make you "feel". With none of the powers being explained all it has going for it is a very few flashy fights.

There are some minor new scenes, but there are entire plot lines cut. Though it is still a coherent story, and only noticed a single hiccup in the flow. Is not a replacement for the series, you will miss stuff and characters entirely if you only watch this.
Can't really recommend watching this instead, as it offers little over the original show, while have reduced content. But is a solid movies in itself.
I haven't noticed any differences in the visuals or the sound, and it was something fun to watch.
How long does a review have to be? There isn't much to say about this. Go watch

Fun train trivia: The darker the smoke the less efficiently the fuel is burned.
Well, lets start with the good things, because certainly it's the shorter part and because there will be spoilers later.
The Art:
Very nice, well done fights and character designs, the world also looks nice and the trains feels like big pieces of metal on rails. But they cheated, there are parts where it's just still shaken around a bit, while the stills are nice, it's still not animation.
The sound:
As you would expect, the sound is amazing, easily the bet thing in the anime.
And the core concept which it is built around, steampunk environment,
...
giant fortresses and armored trains making travel between them possible because zombies plague the lands. Should be good right?
And that's about the good things. Because even though the show had all these amazing stuff it did nothing with it.
*spoilers*
Well, let's start with world building, people live in giant fortress cities, and the only way to travel between them is with armored trains, because there are zombies everywhere and you don't want to get bitten by them. As it is their bite turns you into a zombie, and an added bonus is their hard solidifies into some very hard material that needs special equipment to be destroyed.
Because you kill zombies by destroying the heart, right?
And here we run into our first major problems with the setting, in the very first episode it is shown that zombies can be cut, pierced, or even wrestled. So right in episode I the zombies are presented as possessing human like biology, obviously expected since they were human, at best they are operating with limiters removed, if you don't know about it, humans can turn into superhumans in extreme situations, thus I would say around 3x5 the strenght of a human male, and maybe some minor regenerative boost.
Still they seemingly posses no intellect, although later we are show special "learner" zombies, they are still pretty much on the levels of animals.
So this instantly pops up the question: If you can cut of a zombies leg to stop it from walking, cut off it's arms to further limit it, or simply cut off it's head, why aim at the heart? They still fucntion almost indentically to humans, beheading them would make as good as dead even if they somehow not die.
So it shouldn't be that hard to stop them, but maybe people are just afraid of getting bitten? Well of course, they are essentially running around naked, with only one or two layer of simple cloth protection, which can still be sufficient protection, but they just don't cover up properly. And besides they are in the industrial age, way past full plate armor, it wouldn't take a genious to figure out that cover some areas in thin metal plates would help a lot.
Right in episode one, the threat of zombies is essentially nullified, and they can be written up to plot convenience.
And that's what this show is all about, plot convenience, everything just happens to drive the plot, it doesn't matter if it makes sense, or breakes previolsy established rules. And this is the worst thing, because otherwise both the story and worldbuilding would be good. Same thing happens with power levels, in one case the mc fights off like a hundred zombies alone and in the next he gets kicked around by 3 thugs, it just doesn't make sense. It's forced drama.
The story in itself is plausible, the main thread is the main cast abroad the "Kotetsujou" is running from station to station trying to find safety, makes sense, nothing too fishy about it, but all the little detail, the subplots, most of the character developement that comes with it, is extremely forced and most people act like retards, because smart people could solve the zombie problem overnight. There is another thread that makes a lot less sense, but is essentially the prince taking revenge over the king, the reason is trash, and makes no sense, and it makes even less sense that he just brings people into the cities because people should be fighting, casing tens of thousands of deaths.
The characters:
The MC is tripical shounenshit trash mc, can only spew shit about morality, "killing is bad so I won't kill the genocidal maniac" kind, mostly annoying, and as mentioned above if the plot requires him to lose he will, despite showing before that he is clearly strong.
Mumei is cute, that's about the only good thing about her, she is even more retarded than most other people, which is used to drive the plot.
The MC has some friends, that are not much of a characters.
The Ojou-sama and he knight is about the only good characters, but sadly they are also required to be retarded, but both of them grow in a good way and are to most sanely acting characters.
The big bad guy is horribly written, his actions seems compltely random sometimes and make no sense, he is also played like a saturday morning cartoon villain, evil for the sake of evil, only for the show to try to redeem him the last second.
I like fortresses, I like trains, I like zombies and I somewhat like steampunk stuff, yet this show, that has all, was horrible for me, the story is so absurd that it had me laughing at supposedly sad parts because it so blatanly forced. The OP and ED are way more enjoyable than the entirety of the show.

It's bad, I don't know what other people see in it.
*might contain spoilers*
The story doesn't really know where it wants to go, not only that but it seems to heavily borrow from other shows, such as NGE, but utterly fails to understand what what made those good. The episodes switch from SoL to grimdark to mecha fighting, you might get a "funny" comedic episode then get a backstory about wiping out a city. Near the end, where they have to save the world there is an episode, a full episode, of them playing football, you don't get 50 episodes for nothing. Speaking of the number
...
of episodes, this is a 12, at maximum 15, episode show, and the rest is just filler or story episodes at very slow pace, most of the background characters don't even characterization besides one trait, and they stuck with that for 50 episodes. It's not even worldbuilding or anything and I would guess around half of the episodes could be just dropped without the story having to be changed. Most of the things are not explained anyway and there are things that are important for one episode, then completely forgotten for the rest of the show. And the worst thing is that it turns out that the villain is in the right.
Art is mostly good, with quality drops here and there, I suppose with 50 episode show you get that, but nothing special. The unique alien designs were good, but thanks to the story we don't get to see them too much. The charaters also look distinct, but not much is done with that.
Sound is about the same as art, OPs and EDs are good.
Most of the characters are absolutely garbage, there is one that's only role is to function like a note twice during the whole show.
Let's start with the MC, who is retarded. Probably actually has some mental illness, this is beyond normal anime stuff. It takes him 20 fucking episodes to realize that mechs are piloted by humans, despite piloting one himself. He probably killed dozens by that point if not hundreds. In the first place, he joined a pirates/criminals he was bored. The whole thing is played out as good guys vs bad guys before and after that, as if a policeman was evil because he tries to uphold the law and the show dehumanizes them to the point that they look as if they were machines. This brings up another point, the MC has character developement, but it keeps getting reset.
Eureka seems to swing between two personalities and doesn't seem to have any developement besides what happened in her flashbacks. That is, she suddenly grow maternal instinct when, after gunning down a bunch of people she found three children and decided to adopt them. These children continue to fuck up things and act as annoying as possible for the most of the show.
Holland, the leader of the criminal band, is a manbaby, it's a term that perfectly fits. Why the rest would follow him? Because most of the crew is 30-40 year old hippies that are even worse.
Talho is one of the better characters, she have her reasons and goals, and actually developes through the stroy. Her personality might not be the best, but it fits.
There isn't much to say about the rest of the crew, they really have anything going for them.
On the other side Anemone and Dominic gets just enough screentime to be likeable, I would say they are the only people in the show that gets actual character developement and traits, and not just what they need for the story, even though the romance might feel a bit forced, they most certainly cared for each other.
Apart from them, the other duo are the most likeable characters, Charles and Ray, they are actually good, kind people. Miles better than anyone on the Gekko, it's hard not to cheer for them, but they are killed off. I guess they were too good for the show.
The villain, Holland's brother, but that's only important for exactly one scene, is another well done character, and though his motives might not be the best, his goals are certainly worthy, to purge Holy Terra of the xeno menace. Through flasbacks it is show how he got there and while he does not get much developement, he is well established and his actions doesn't come out of nowhere.
Honorable mention goes to the army captain and his crew, barely any screentime, but they are present during most of the show, not much developement, but they end up being likeable.
The shows lenght really takes a lot out of enjoyement, especially when it's just another filler episode. I can say without a shame that there were episodes I watched at speed, as I mentioned above, there are lots of pointless stuff that doesn't nothing for the story or the characters. And even if it wasn't 50 episodes, most of the characters really suck, the story is a rehash of NGE and done badly. The original idea of surfing mecha is really good, and the way they've done is also good, but they just left it as that.
Overall it is not a good show by any means, it's note even average, while it has a few good moments, ideas and characters, the sheer amount of episodes and the focus on the worst characters with a bad story pushes those into the background, showcasing the worst aspects it has to offer.

Fanatic pacifist hippy mc who doesn't care how many innocent people and "asshole" soldiers have to die so he can keep forcing people to listen to his singing in the middle of battle. He repeatedly intereferes with the elimination of the enemy because he is convinced his singing will make everyone buddy buddy. One of the most annoying MCs, he is right and everyone else is wrong, he does whatever he wants, no one can tell him what to do, such a rebel!
And it doesn't help that they made like 4 songs for him for 49 episiodes and he keeps repeating the same one for
...
the first 20 or so episodes. While the scenes are also repeated, they reused a lot of scenes to the point that sometimes you can't tell if it's a flashback or not.

It's less, than the original, a lot less. I don't understand the reason for making three newish movies to change a single plot important thing, about Shirley while throwing a lots of things into chaos, it barely even matters anyway. She gets like a minute of new scenes, but at the same time almost all school interactions are cut, the only ones that are not, are those which are plot heavy, like the declaration, which is done differently too, almost all character backgrounds are also cut, the student council members barely have any screen time, let alone interactions with Lelouch, old and new scenes mixed
...
together ofter changing animation quality and voice acting from one scene to the other, not to mention they ofted contradict the old story, it is ridiculous when people change from one scene to the other, and a lots of things left unexplained, I guess it's assumed the viewer would fill the holes from the OG, but with how the new plot is changed causality often cannot be estabilished because the action that started the chain in the OG is not present here, but OG event still happened for whatever reason.

It baffles me that people can say straight faced that only a few things changed and it mostly is the same as the OG. Yes, the generaly plot line is largely the same, but the results are meaningless if the means re wrong (I think I heard that in some OTHER anime ; ) ), and the road to the end vastly changed, mostly to the worst.
The story is mostly shallow, in no small part because the first two movies failed to properly estabilish characters, it mostly follows the last few episodes of R2 the amount of plotholes and cut scenes are as you would
...
expect from a series-made-movie, but there are still important scenes cut and some things still don't make any sense.

What did this movies do? Nothing it's loosely linked chain of events, we get no character developement, important acts like kamine island is completely cut, so is the whole escape from Japan and liberation of china, suzaku is in Europe the whiole time btw, there are bullshit asspulls to fit the holes that this creates to the point it is no longer believable. The whole of the first half of R2 is fitted into around 20 minutes, I don't think anyone from the school is even shown, the relationship between Ougi and Viletta is reduced to
...
single sentence, Lelouch actually gives Rolo the phone-chain thing, just before the attack the geass stronghold, but still says later that he wanted to give it Nunally, even though he previously said it was only to manipulate him. The whole movie is an iconsistent clusterfuck, the events's chronology is often messed up, while characters forget stuff that happened just before.
TL;DR:
The plot is a mess, lots of scenes just doesn't fit, the characters lack any depth and they often contradict themselves, and the problem of voice and quality change still persist from I.
