Mixed Feelings
Eva 4.0 is a strange amalgam of...something.

Anno is basically putting his mindset literally onto the screen, something any NGE series fan can understand. Unfortunately what comes out doesn't fit within the confines of the narrative that was built up by the previous three Rebuilds; instead it breaks the fourth wall while outright ignoring any semblance of a coherent plot or resolution.

I don't think this is praise worthy, it's a step down from the TV series.
A good story will get its message across while keeping narrative cohesion. So I have to ask, did Anno take so long between these movies that he just ended up giving ...

Claymore (Manga) add
Claymore is an emotional read. Sometimes it's about cutting down yoma in a mission, and certainly later on, a more complex character driven narrative. The author manages to illustrate the extent of many of the powers present in the land of Claymore, and perhaps goes over the top. That being said, the focus was never lost, and even wraps around by the end to tell the meaning that the story was showcasing throughout. It's a story of life and love in a violent land full of malicious intent.

The art was never lacking, and neither was my enjoyment.

This is a fairly decent manga. You shouldn't go a full volume without at least a couple chuckles.

I remember first hearing about the anime and watching a bit around 2003 (which I mostly disliked because of the constant violence against Keitaro) but the aesthetic and allure remained.

I had heard the old phrase "the manga is better" so I eventually gave it a shot (almost 2 decades later), and I have to mostly agree. The violence still exists but it's simply in the nature of this kind of story, he gets destroyed but is back the next panel with a bandaid, there's even a running joke ...
