Both are warming stories about the first love and what it comes with it. Both include the age difference topic: how the male protagonist struggles his feelings and tries to maintain a "proper" distance, along with the appereance of younger rivals. While Hirunaka no Ryuusei tells the story of a teacher-student relationship, in Taiyou no ie you'll find the childhood friends relationship, and family problems, that need to be handled in order for the characters to grow.
