Hello, citizens of MAL. This is my first review so...yeah. It is a review best recieved by people who have already viewed the anime...
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS...
Firstly, I'd like to say that I began watching this series I don't know how many months ago. The plot was intriguing, the characters that they had introduced were interesting: Yuno being mysterious, Yukiteru being reserved blah blah blah...
Something about it attracted me. The concept of the future diaries was alluring to me.
Then after watching episode 15 I stopped. Why did I stop you ask? Why did I abandon the anime I had been somewhat intrigued by? I'll
...
tell you why. Because the main characters were unbearable. Let's start with our protagonist. Yukkii. He is somewhat clever, very reserved, and extremely weak. I would have liked to see some character development from him throughout the show...but alas, I could get none until episode 24/25?
[this show has 26 episodes (and an OVA which I will address later)]
Basically Yuno is intensely obsessed with Yukiteru. She loves him. When the future diary game starts and all the owners learn that there can only be one left, Yuno vows to protect Yukkii at all costs, which was understandable..she LOVES him. And what does Yukkii do? He accepts is and uses her. He shows little to no affection her way. He just uses her. And for those who are saying that he's just a boy and he's scared and all this other stuff..stop for a second and think.
There's a beautiful girl that's in love with him and she would do anything to protect you. And you show no sign of wanting to protect her. Yes, Yukki probably liked Yuno to an extent but there was no real love or genuine emotion coming from him. That said this kid cries....A LOT. If you don't like a main protagonist that cries a gallon of tears every episode then don't watch this anime. Just saying...
But anyway Yukki shows absolutely no drive to help or care for Yuno and it is illustrated beautifully (and tragically) in episode 15.
There are two other diary owners (the two 7ths who are a couple that are very much in love). They are after Yukki and Yuno (the 1st and 2nd).
When Yukki and Yuno are forced to face the 7s the 7s announce that it is "a battle of couples" or something like that saying that "they had to love each other more to win" and it was a battle of love. So the two sevens are prepared to fight side by side. And Yukki is prepared to sit back and watch Yuno fight them. Long story short 2 against 1 isn't a good bet and Yuno falls to the ground unconscious. The male 7 goes up to Yukiteru, picks him up one-handed, and says "Why didn't you come and save your girl? A real man would've jumped into the fire to save his girl!". He's pissed at Yukki, as was I. Yukki then goes on a rather depressing rant on how he's pathetic and he knows it and he's weak and you guessed it...he cries like a schoolgirl.
Then one of my favorite moments of the show begins.
The male 7 looks at Yukki in disgust and says "Just die.", throwing Yukki over the rail.
So that's Yukki in a nutshell for 92% of the series.
Yuno on the other hand, while brave, brutal, and blunt, is doing everthing for Yukki. So you have a main character that sucks and another that is better but is completely obsessed and in love with the character that sucks. Also, I want to mention his strange connection with his dad only a few days after he killed his mom. Yukkii isn't really mad..he seems bothered but not ready to even punch the guy in the face...this bothered me SO MUCH. he was even ready to forgive him right before his dad was killed...WHAT THE HECK.
Now to briefly talk about the other characters.
What is 8th. Just...what.
Akise is one of the best characters: smart, intuitive.
Kousaka: comic relief, kind of an ahole, aight though
Hinata: not bad
Mao: not bad, lesbian tendencies provided a little comic relief. meh.
7s: the best characters of the show. I'd like to spend an entire review on just them and their story but I can't. ups and downs, twists and turns...amazing, unforgettable characters...and they don't get enough screen time...
11th: overpowered. no.
Yukki's dad: kind of dbag....
Yukki's mom: nice, caring, the typical anime mom, let's face it she's a joy to have around
Yuno's parents: ugh.
And now that I've spent most of this review talking about Yukki, I'd love to get onto other things. This show actually explores a lot of themes and ideas that I liked. The dimensional jumping, although a little difficult to follow at first, isn't so bad, and the way Ninth and Akise had a larger role in the show than we thought was pretty cool. I also would like to mention one of my other top moments of the show. It was when Deus was prepared to erase Akise from existence. After failing to name one thing that he did of his own free will, Akise starts to dissolve, and he does briefly. That gave me chills. Anyway back to the plot. Basically it was sort of all over the place but the OVA (Mirai Nikki: Redial) redeemed the show's depressing ending.
So that's my very lopsided review. Um. Thanks..ok. yeah.
