Both animes are set in a distant futuristic world while the main characters of both shows slowly unravel the mysteries of the world they live in. As they discover things they probably shouldn't have, their curiosity tends to get the best of them as they dive deeper and deeper in learning more about how they and their world came to be while slowly having doubts and harboring suspicions on the people close to them. Both animes have great world building as we also learn more of this unexplored "new world". Although Houseki no Kuni anime stops somewhere in the manga, the manga is also a good read and highly recommended.

The main theme I notice with these two animes is that the main characters are both girls who don't "fit in to society" (Violet being a girl raised for war is now trying to find meaning in her life after the war, and Maquia belonging in a race of immortals secluded from humanity). Both girls have amazing character development as the show progresses as they learn about the world around them. Both have stunning visuals and great ost, as well as bittersweet and emotional moments. Bring tissues.

While it's easily noticeable that one is somewhat a lighthearted comedy and the other is more drama focused, both shows deal with the loss of a loved one and the stages of grief, denial, and acceptance. Another aspect is about the stories the main characters make and the people they meet throughout their travels. Both shows are very inspiring while also giving you this "magical" feeling to it from the stunning visuals, amazing animation, and beautiful soundtracks. And most of all, both animes WILL make you cry.

Both main characters have this time related ability that allows them to go back into the past, albeit Re: Zero is more magic and fantasy related and Steins;Gate being a sci-fi anime, they still have the same theme. Both of the MCs will stop at nothing even if it's to repeat the same events over and over to save the people they love. Not to mention, both are made by the same studio and have done an amazing anime adaptation on both animes. If you want pain and suffering, and are a fan of Steins;Gate and other psycho-thriller animes, Re: Zero is the one for you. Tuturu~
