Gurren Lagann’s essence can be basically summarised by one of it’s many awe-inspiring quotes: “Go beyond the impossible and kick reason to the curb!” While this may initially seem to be very corny, the show manages to captivate you so profoundly - and in a fashion so unique it shouldn’t be allowed to exist - that you lose all desire to critique its flaws and become fully immersed in it’s, literal, ‘galaxy-sized’ fights.
Plot - 9/10
Characters - 10/10 (One of my favourite TV casts; it’s so beautiful to watch them develop throughout the show)
Art, animation & sound - 10/10 (Fight animation wholly compensates for the
...
dated aspects of the shows aesthetic)
Impression - 10/10 (Yes, I cried)
Overall - 10/10
Pros: Incredible action sequences that make you more giddy and orgasmic than any porno, increasing in calibre with each episode; great character development; perfect, lovable, cast; brilliantly unpredictable; beautiful philosophical messages; awe-inspiring; good comedy; heavenly OST which emphasises every mood to perfection; can just about pull off anything without making it feel clichéd or like a shitpull - turns lack of realism into one of its strongpoints.
Cons: Minor homophobia - didn’t affect my regards to the show, but felt redundant; infrequent drop in animation quality.
If you can come to terms with it’s ‘overthetopness’ of it, this show is a gem - I seriously consider if there will ever be an anime, in my lifetime, that can be as charismatic as this.
