Aqua (Manga) add
A very short manga (only two volumes), but this is definitely one of the best I’ve ever read. It’s got the same sort of appeal that K-On! has, that laid-back feeling where you’re not really following a story or anything, you’re just enjoying what’s in front of you at a leisurely pace. Aqua introduces a science fiction future where the ice caps on Mars melt and cover almost the entire planet in water. What’s left was terraformed heavily, and most of the cities have extensive canal systems (à la Venice, Italy). This, in my opinion, is the strongest point of the manga – a very ...

Aria (Manga) add
I’m not sure if it’s possible that I can convey just how much I love this manga, or why. I can tell you this, though: if you gave Aqua a shot and didn’t take to it, then there’s no hope that you’ll like Aria. Aria is just 60 more chapters of Aqua, with basically the same type of storytelling throughout. The only key differences are direct consequences of its lengthiness – more characters, deeper exploration of Neo Venezia and its people, some legends and references that work with the extra length. All of this stuff is awesome, but it doesn’t change the fact that this ...

Colorful (Anime) add
Mixed Feelings
There’s really no point in writing a full review because there’s only two criteria that decide if you’re going to enjoy this or not. The first is whether you can handle the perversion. It’s not quite as messed up as Hen Zemi but it’s pretty damn perverse. Panty shots, though prolific, are the least of your worries here – there’s one memorable scene where a guy sneaks into the bathroom after a woman is done peeing and rubs his face all over the toilet seat to feel the residual warmth. Another very short scene at the end of an episode is a short exchange between ...

Gosick (Anime) add
I’m not really sure where exactly to begin with this one, so I’ll start with the easy bits. The visuals, in a nutshell, look fabulous – this is one of the few series that I would seriously buy in Blu-Ray. The backgrounds are gorgeous and detailed, but not to the point that they stand out too much; somehow, they blend in perfectly. The art on the characters is clean, vibrant, and astonishingly good. It can sometimes be troublesome to tell the more minor characters apart, but all of the primary characters are drawn with an incredible amount of personality and uniqueness. The animation isn’t outstanding, ...

Angel Beats! (Anime) add
Angel Beats! had a LOT of good stuff in it. There was plenty here to make a truly awesome show, and not least of that would be the video and audio components. The art style isn’t particularly unique or good-looking, but the animation is unbelievable. I’m talking Redline-level animation quality here. It’s insane. The BGM is a little unorthodox, and sometimes used in weird ways, but it sounds great and usually fits the scene very well. The OP and ED are both fantastic, not to mention the truly amazing video that goes with the OP. This show is a treat for both your eyes and ...

Cowboy Bebop (Anime) add
Anyway, starting off with the usual: the visuals. The art style is somewhat gritty and dark, very similar to Western animation, and misses some of the usual tropes we’ve come to expect from anime – huge eyes, crazy spiky hair, et cetera. The only character who looks particularly anime-like is Faye, but she’s a visual anomaly all to herself. Seriously, what in the world was up with her clothes? I could overlook that in a less serious anime than this but it’s so freaking hard to take the show seriously when this woman is dancing around in a… whatever kind of get-up that is. I ...

Bamboo Blade (Anime) add
The first, obvious thing about this anime is the visual style. It reminded me heavily of Jinki:Extend and School Days, which I guess isn’t a very flattering-sounding comparison, but still. The characters are drawn with a bright, cute style, and the backgrounds are impressively detailed. The big thing here is the subtlety of the animation, which is extremely important considering the personality of one of the characters. There are many moments throughout the show where there will be just a tiny movement of a person’s head or mouth or hand, but will convey a lot of meaning and make the show that much more immersive. ...
