You know, I would like to say that this show is dumb fun to me.
No.
It is something that my middle school self long ago would want if he was isekai'd to another world. Reading the llight novel, it was everything I wished to be--the plain-looking dude whose some vigilante fighting against the vaguely looming evil of the world.
However, I stopped believing those lofty ambitions I had when I was young. There was no big evil organization that runs the world on a string. And I sure as hell did not want to get bullied.
Now, as a grown adult, this show has unpacked
...
everything I wished and hope for. Not only that, it was done by the company who made one of my first anime. The animation was subpar, but I don't care.
In the myriad of great animes this season, The Eminence in Shadow will never go down as one the many great modern classics, nor will it ever be regarded as the greatest works, the likes such as Chainsaw Man or as big as Bleach.
However, what I can say about this show is that it will be one of the greatest parodies I have watched, hands down. And to that, I call that a masterpiece--clearly, the show knows what it is, and I love it.
If you hope for great art, then I am very sorry--there are good shows you can watch this season. Alternatively, if you're here to watch a great appreciation of a genre/trope well beloved as Isekai, then you have come to the right place.
And with that, I conclude this review. I am atomic.
Alright, that shit was cringe.

I've watched this show at least 4 to 5 times including the English Dub (fantastic stuff than my usual watch for English Sub). I attempted to read a little bit of the manga and novel to see the main difference, and boy, there is just a plethora of difference I'm not even gonna go over, and will just purely based this review on solely by the anime itself.
Firstly, is it a good anime? Honestly, it's not the greatest, but neither it is the worst. I watch anime blind nowadays like a caveman who came back, living his life, touching grass (which I'll just face it,
...
it's not a lot of grass touching time than I hope so). I've had my fair share of playing dating sims (both so bad that it's good and just downright horrible), and only liked this anime because of some of the crazy mechanics and settings that I've somewhat genuinely encountered and relate to. It's freaking bonkers, and it's a knick in the scrotum for those who barely even play dating sims, and is only familiar with the isekai/fantasy genre that is integrated into this story. It's a true shit show.
It's not for everyone, and I can admit that. I don't love it, but I like the stupidity that is going on in this anime. I personally just enjoy Leon being a menace to society throughout the story. I mean, the story, especially it's setting, barely understands what it wants to be, and I think that's pretty much the point, I guess. Dude is stuck in a shitty dating sim game by a company who is known to only make JRPG and action-oriented games. it's no wonder the story's setting can be a bit jarring--a fantasy world based on a renovated Earth with aliens which somehow assimilated back to medieval times with switching gender norms, and you have to marry into a family just like the olden-days? Can I have a joint with what the author of the light novel is having? They seem a lot of fun.
Otherwise, this is an entirely mixed bag. I wouldn't even take this seriously if you're trying to get into the story genuinely. Just go pick up either the manga or novel. The anime has it's flaws, but I find it to be a gem personally. Objectively though, I think it's fine.

Just by writing this, it's not a review, but a statement that I want to make: I can't believe it's not hentai. Seriously, the plot was sort of all over the place and I didn't get the chance to understand the motivation of each character literally in seven minutes and forty slow seconds. I think it's not even enough considering how much I wasted my time watching this in which I thought it was hentai. At least it had some quality meme picturing there, out of context, but even in context: the story is not concise. Art is aight; like I said, I though it
...
was hentai because the quality of it felt like it. The pieces are kinda okay, but the characters I just can't pass them as one. It's just a waist of your time if you're here for the plot: it's just shenanigans. That's all.

Hey, it's your local depress weeb here,
Don't even expect much of this: I just rewatched this episode just for shits-and-giggles and safe to say, it's fanservice so don't even give this a try. Of course, it's good fap material if you're into this, but I rather you not to a doujin of HOTD more than anything. The details of all the women are as finely as they can ever be, and you might get freaked in the first place, but remember my words: it's fanservice. I mean, this was a sort of opportunity and I would of probably still enjoyed the series (of course I
...
still do), but I wish they really didn't do this. Anyways, it's mediocre fanservice and a lot of sexual innuendos as you still might expect in the old 2000s; however, it's at least better than today's standard here at 2020. By the way, the world is currently fucked so if you're reading this, consider this a grave-post. Enjoy your beautiful future.
Signing out.

As I write this, I understand that my review will be very opinionated, and I do not intend for anyone to share this sentiment with me: on that note, the content discussed here will be more so about how this anime can essentially teach a person about life.
I believe that art can be subjective and it depends on how people view as good or bad art. As much as possible, I tried to keep an open mind as I go into any mediums whatever the case that show is being boxed into. It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I want you to
...
be aware that this review is based on how the anime carries itself.
That being said, there are always good adaptions as well as bad ones. I've watched a lot of melodramas of my time (before I became the otaku archetype and even now), and this is really no different than any other.
However, the difference between those melodramas (whether it's anime or actual drama), this anime has pointers that could better understand humanity in a philosophical and psychological level.
I don't claim myself to be a philosophical expert, nor am I a psychologist. I only indulge into those topics because I like stories that basically challenges my being and stories that look into the characters.
Let's consider this: in reality, we can consider there are many protagonists in the world with stories of their own about their livelihood. And in this reality there's a force that seems to put a pebble in our shoes every time we encounter them, or make us stop in our tracks. And that's tragedy.
Whether you believe the world is stricken with a curse for humanity to suffer, or are simply obstacles meant to move us forward, fundamentally, there is always the chance someone is having a bad day or worse. Most of us are likely to never move forward in this world remaining stagnant because of the tragedies that consume our lives. Life seems to only become increasingly wicked as the days pass by. You, a being in this world, trap in an endless loop of this crappy life. Maybe you're having a good time with your life now, but I know most of us are suffering in varying degrees and wished to be like you although fueled by envy.
Not everyone has the capacity to realize what it means to live your life, and how heavy the responsibility is being a free individual. You have to realize that you must become dependent on yourself to decide what it is you want to do, and fully understanding the situation you're in. Many of us are like Violet in a sense that we are still growing emotionally: a characteristic in humanity that is deep and complex.
When you're young, you aren't aware of the circumstances around you as you only understand the constant: that you are you, and that's what all matters. In that sense, this individual is observant, and sees things as is (although it's warped to only see things how the person experienced). It is the bare truth of one's self: you never think to yourself that you are a young person. You just know you are what you are: what makes up the person you ought to be. This individual is often ignorant of reality because this person was innocent. Everything in its current state is fine: as long as the stability of life is dependent on some guardian or parent helps coordinate that.
Like a child, we want order in our lives, and that's why tragedy always makes a mess of us. Tragedy is very fair: it does not discriminate among everyone. It's like a plague that's been caught to every single person that breathes. Nobody can escape from it: not if you have left on God's green Earth will it catch anyone. And there will be a sure time that you, one way or another, will suffer the same fate as everyone else will. It's practically inevitable to every human being.
It makes us questions ourselves whether this is retribution to the people who did wrong, but more often than not, this happens to even to those who are morally good (religious or not). It questions about existence, and purpose of life, but most certainly what makes a person be able to live the wiles of life despite the world being such a chaotic, more often than not, evil force in terms of societal and moral issue. It's clear that somebody's hands are more dirtier than others, but it does not change the fact you overall aren't a good person (and you're able to realize that after truly reflecting on your actions and the responsibilities you have as a free individual).
That's said, I really believe that this anime was phenomenal. It really hit me harder than any melodramatic shows I've ever watched. The show really does try to make a person cry (admittedly, I haven't cried a lot when I watched this series besides the tenth episode). But, I think the show relates to a lot of people who are really soul searching as this is what Violet was really doing. She's trying to figure out what Gilbert was saying to her until the very end.
Whether you hate or love this kind of content: I think there's a lot that you can learn from this anime especially when it's talking about living life. I would certainly recommend this to people who really likes stuff like this, and I think everyone should have a chance to watch it and roll with the emotional punches in each episodes.

You don't really have to agree with me on anything I have to say: I like watching animes before the 2010s. I consider them classics (of course, depending on what series we're talking here).
I sometimes see these shows and find things that could possibly fit our current medium. I don't particularly like harems in general, but there is a few exceptions. Maburaho is one of these harems that I like and not today's harem. Sometimes, all the main focus of today's harem are the fan-service bullshitery I rather watch in hentai where it should be done.
What this show did was a good mix
...
between the relationship between the girls, and how the story has carried out. If it weren't a harem, this is how it would turn out:
Despite the fact Kazuki has one of the greatest family all-in-one, he is unable to use it in an unlimited range. This causes him to have the lowest grades in terms of competitiveness in magic, not the most athletic guy, and all things considered the most normal individual you will find (which in a world full of magicians, he is considerably the weakest in that aspect). Yet, ladies come after this man because he has the greatest-magician bundle within his crotch. If he were to give offspring, chances are that he would have children with amazing abilities much superior than Kazuki's and his previous family members.
The fact that any girl would want this man will give any of them the highest status as their offspring will do great things. Of course, this is met with the other men competing to get with these ladies.
Do you see why it could be a good show without harem?
If these kinds of aspects were to exist, I would think it be much more interesting as a story. Despite all that, I'm very satisfied with the series (although I don't like it got dragged into 24 episodes).
Just think about it: if all his good for are his genes, then as an individual, should he also be treated the same? The guy himself is powerful: just because he is limited to cast magic eight times, by no means can he use it to his strategic advantage. Just like a saying in a book called the Art of War by Sun Tzu:
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.
A story like a shonen or a typical underdog story line would something enjoyable (at least for me) to see.
Overall, it's a classic I really like to use a reference in my writing hobby. There's a lot that can be derived simply within the components of the anime however minuscule it may be. Rewatching it is something I'd consider always doing.

You can buck-head don't have to find this review helpful or anything: I'm making this review because it was one of the gateway animes for me since I was already into some weird stuff back then (because I liked Doctor Who and the old blocky game where you mine and craft).
During my younger years, I caught a classmate watching this anime in the library while class was going. This is one of the last thing you would find people do, and I've seen students watch all kinds of things (even blasting it and getting kicked out). This person had the genius in their brain
...
to have headphones on and not doing the assignment given to them (literally giving all the supposed reasons that they're doing it just to be conniving about it).
A classic madlad in my take.
With that aside, that's the kind of show it is. It's engaging to the point you're not doing work in the middle of class. In addition, it's only thirteen episodes long: I even discussed with this person there should be more of it when I took interest to the show and almost be a snitch to the teacher about it afterwards ('cause that's how it started).
This kind of show is like a food for thought to this person, and I was all for it. Now, the art may be old, but you gotta appreciate the idea that a person could watch this on YouTube before COPPA or current YT CEO hellbent on a show that, for legal reasons, should not be distributed to the public. I mean, what the hell are you gonna watch when your teacher ain't that engaging? This show, of course!
It can be raunchy at times. I mean hell it's a freaking HAND: like isn't your hand your girlfriend already?
With that in mind: it's most definitely a classic. The characters can be iffy depending on your litmus test for tropes. Personally, it's mind-boggling enough to give your right hand having feelings. I would never think of such to this show because of it. It's very good.
I appreciate shows that came out way before the 2010s which is sometimes hard to watch, but a pay-off to watch through it nonetheless. It was getting better at the time which probably at the time I was a complete normie. The only thing that got me caught in this web of trash goodness was Yu-Gi-Oh!, Hajime no Ippo, and TRIGUN (which ran short in my area and got cancelled for good).
Overall, it's just making love to your hand. I'd be abusing my own if the art wasn't 'eh'. Other than that, a good watch.

I'm not going to spoil much, but here's my honest opinion when watching this: read the manga. The series itself doesn't entirely follow the manga (even by its ending itself) so bear with me.
Be warned, if you do not have the emotional capacity to deal with anything sexual, or serious topic: why are you even here? Either wise, I urge you follow the manga after watching.
It's not my place to praise the anime, but tell my honest opinion about it. I thought the anime was so 2010s. Around that time, I consumed similar content and was my gateway to pretty much the anime community. Although,
...
my initial thoughts were that this could be a good gateway anime: I can probably only show it to a few of my friends who are interested in this kind of content.
The beginning was so off: it exceeded my expectations despite to what entails to this kind of medium. And the same impact was done for the ending.
Honestly, I feel dejected and kind of sad how the anime ended. I doubt there will be a continuation of this anime any time soon: it's a huge slap in the face of going to the source itself. But, there's also a lot you can learn in this anime. It's very grounded in reality. At the same time, this is still fantasy which is what charmed me to watch in the first place.
I think if this came out at the time it was being made an anime, I would certainly believe people would enjoy this content: probably rate higher. But, times have change and we have too. I feel like it had a chance to be great, personally.
Besides the art and music being great (especially the music because it was hard to watch for some episodes), I would say the character was pretty well written, though personally I hate the MC in the anime, and I loved him more in the manga.
Like I said, I don't want to spoil much, but I will write a review in the manga section of Domestic Girlfriend.
Enjoyment. I can't say I love the ending. I've mention before that I'm not gonna spoil: I have to for this portion. The last episode in the anime made me angry and sad at the same time. I didn't like what the producers did for the last episode. Honestly, I would settle for a years later type of episode. The episode had it end with Rui going back to Natsuo which I find it so detesting.
It had me think two things:
a) It's so depressing of the fact that Natsuo saw Hina in Rui when she was checking herself out after she went out with her friend (I think for new clothes) which she proceeds to once again (presumably) wants to revitalize their relationship that,
b) got me so pissed to the point of insanity: the pain was too real and I was literally playing Joji - Love Us Again while murdering my bed and pillow. It felt so wrong to do that at in this episode which is frustrating.
I'm an avid anime watcher, but never in my life had I feel so detested on an episode since partaking the medium that is anime itself.
I find it hard to enjoy when trying to read the manga instead of watching it; however, I'll give an exception due to the fact that I love the show, and I am currently enjoying the manga.
You can find my full opinion after finishing the manga, but overall for the anime:
A solid 8: Very Good.

Now, I didn't watch that much anime and hentai until now. It's been several years since I've consumed the content, and now that I am returning, I finally took the time to watch this "show."
I'm a bit shocked by the amount of response from this anime despite being alright. A good 7 at best. It's not that bad at all in terms of the art itself, especially their characterization.
I find Stunk and the rest of the guys funny be it their whole job is pretty much Nux's job (a Youtuber I've recently took interest in).
I've gotten a bit stiff on some of
...
the scenes; I liked a few girls they reviewed (ironically). I mean, if you think about it, it's literally the community in a nutshell: finding the best anime or what not. Looking for reviews and such just as you're reading right now. I mean, it's so meta in a way.
So, if you're a returning viewer, and you haven't been diving deep into this website in awhile. You can certainly watch this, that is if you're kinda horny but don't wanna work yourself too much to get off from it. This is pretty much perfect for you.
It varies in every person, but I just like the waifus mostly.
