I have to start this off by saying that this is seriously shaping up to be one of my favorite anime, maybe of all time, even. This depends on how the rest of this goes, of course, but so far, it's everything I love.
I will also preface the rest of my review by stating that I HAVE NOT WATCHED THE ORIGINIAL Trigun, nor do I plan to watch it (though this is subject to change). Therefore, I went into Trigun Stampede totally blind and without expectations. The following will be my reaction to the show's first four episodes (the most recent episode released at
...
the time of writing).
The music choice is stellar--the opening and ending themes have already been added to my playlist and the instrumentals during the actual show are perfect. The art is also very much my style. It's not weird CGI like Mappa with AOT and it's very enjoyable to watch. I love the animation of the guns, especially the way Vash's is drawn. (I seriously cannot emphasize enough how smooth the action is. The art is everything!)
The very quick hook, line, and sinker sort of beginning we have to this anime is great. We're kind of thrown right into the story with the introduction of Vash within the first few minutes, and we're quickly wrapped up into the mystery of what happened when he was a kid and why he's got a bounty over his head now (despite having a very lovable and innocent personality). That leads me into Vash himself, whom I am completely in love with already. He has a compelling backstory (the tragic kid thing) but still a kind persona. I find it refreshing and unique to have a character who's not all about the guns and action. Make no mistake--Vash CAN fight, and he can do it very well--but it's nice to see that fighting is not 100% his personality. The show also introduces moral dilemmas almost immediately and I'm just loving the way the characters have to grapple with these decisions. The journalists are also likable characters and I enjoy the dynamic between the two, along with how they help out Vash.
In all, there are so many reasons to pick this show up! There's mystery, a bit of found family, strong characters to root for, and questions of morality and mortality. What we choose to do in the face of death is who we really are. I look forward to seeing more of this in future episodes! The show would seriously need to mess up somewhere for me to give it anywhere below an 8 as of now. That's how execellent it's been so far.
PS- I understand why those who've seen the original Trigun might be disappointed, but if you treat Trigun Stampede as a standalone anime, I'm sure you'll have a more enjoyable experience! There's much to like about this show and I hope you give it a chance.
