I'd like to state before anything else that directly before watching this I had watched the shitshow that is Arifureta Shokugyou de Sekai Saikyou. What I mean by this is that I have somewhat of a bias towards this show because my bar could not be lower. Even this average isekai anime is leagues better than that.
I will admit that I enjoyed watching Isekai and I binged all 11 currently available episodes in one sitting. It thoroughly refreshed my palette. Now with all that aside, it's a very average isekai anime. The story is average, the art is
...
mediocre and will improve on Blu-ray, the music is fine--I would've picked a different voice for the main chara, but that's just me--and as I mentioned previously, I enjoyed watching this anime. If you're looking for a vanilla isekai story, go right on ahead. I don't think it's particularly special, but good for a watch if you find yourself wanting to watch an Isekai anime.
Now onto my biggest issue with the anime. I honestly don't see the main two characters getting together at all. Perhaps it's because I'm a shipper at heart, but Azuma and Myura have a lot more chemistry than Azuma and Taichi. The het relationship seems forced to appeal to the widest audience, but to me, there's something more with the two women. But of course, that relationship won't happen. I also understand that part of it might just be the fetishization of a lesbian relationship (queerbaiting), but a girl can't help but dream.
TL;DR - If you're looking for a standard, vanilla Isekai anime then this might be it for you. You won't have to think too hard, so it's great as a palette cleanser after watching other bad anime. Would I go out of my way to recommend it? Probably not, but that's what I'm doing right now. But if you're looking for something with more depth to it than yet another standard Isekai anime, then I think you should pass on this. Either way, the decision is up to you.

TL;DR - Worth the hate-watch since the story has potential, but the anime is very not good. The plot is predictable, the animation is shoddy (especially the CGI), fights don't flow, the jokes fall flat, and there's nothing particularly unique about the story. It has potential, but the production fell flat. If you don't feel like reading each part of this, skip to the final paragraph to see my closing thoughts on whether you should watch it or not. I mean, that's usually what I do.
I'd like to mention that at the point I'm at in the anime, I just
...
see flaws. I'm hate watching it. The only thing keeping me going is the curiosity to see where the story leads, but I keep noticing flaws that distract from the story. They bug me enough to stop mid-episode to write this. I never write reviews since I see them as a waste of time for anime, but I get so bored watching this anime that I keep thinking about what else I can add to my list of hated things. I just mean to say that I have a negative bias towards this story. I love fantasy anime (you can see my extensive profile), but this one gives the genre a bad name. So let's get into the nitty-gritty
Story- It's a very average/mediocre story. It's so similar to other isekai stories that it doesn't shine in any particular way. Average guy evolves into a more powerful person because of ___. Very predictable. I found myself waiting for his evolution in the first episode since I knew it would be that way. I wanted to like this anime, I had high hopes, but the writing was cheaply done and just felt like a cash-grab of other popular isekai stories, such as konosuba. There's so much that I can't even begin to explain it all here, to be truthful. It is just an average fantasy new-life story. That's why I gave it an average score. I almost forgot to mention the fights, can you guess what I'll say? They were poorly paced, and I had a hard time trying to get myself invested in the fights. It seemed like a mandated stop before we could get more of the lore — story, fight, story, fight, story, fight, and so on. The monsters weren't particularly special either.
Art- Don't get me started. Jesus Christ. This is the worst part of the anime. I understand that animation companies are on deadlines and that they polish everything up for Blu-ray release, but Jesus Christ is it bad. It's not that the art style itself is bad, but the animation of it. First of all, there are multiple examples of times where they don't use nearly enough frames during a scene, the first thing I think of is around episode 6-7, something happens revolving a ribbon spinning, and it's an actual slide show. I mean, it goes to show how much of an impact this anime has had on me when I can't even remember what caused the scene to happen despite watching it earlier this afternoon. But there are other times like this where the animation looks like it's not completely done. There are so many times during fights that this happens, bunny-girl hits a bunch of rolling balls from a trap, and the scene is a bunch of noise happening, but the camera stays on her hammer then cuts to the balls already in the wall. There's a lot of stuff like this scattered throughout fight scenes, where they focus on one or two frames rather than where the action is. And not to mention most of the larger monsters are poorly done CGI beasts. Their textures don't even match the feel of the rest of the anime. Everything about the animation breaks any immersion you can try to form. It's not the worst I've seen, but most certainly not the best. I gave it a 3 because the animation should never be so bad that it distracts from the story.
Sound- Both the ending and opening theme songs are super sleepers. Very safe, but also very bad. They're generic anime themesongs, and in no way shape or form do I sit through them. Other than that, I have no issues with any of the voice actors or sound effects. They were decent but average. Very standard, safe choices for the sounds. I chose 4 because I really hate the opening/ending songs.
Character- Average. The main couple have good chemistry, but a lot of the jokes feel forced. I hate the forced harem, but what can one do. SAI had to set that bar. The main character has a very "I'm above you" attitude. There's no real sympathy within him for old comrades and the change from his old self to his new self seems a bit too drastic. I'm not saying that much of a change isn't bad, but it takes a lot more time and development than the production team had time/resources for. Gave this a 4 because a lot of the jokes are the generic "shit on this character lol" jokes. Once again, a lot like konosuba, but not as well developed. There was an element of, "Well, this is how other anime make jokes, so we should do it too."
Enjoyment- I'll keep this one short. Nothing about the anime should detract from the viewing experience. By this, I mean that the anime shouldn't break the immersion of the viewer because of certain poor elements. It's fine if a few things happen now and then, but it's kinda annoying to have the same issues happen every single episode. I'll probably finish it because I'm already this far, but I definitely won't remember any part of it in a year. They'll probably break the anime up into two separate seasons, and when the second season comes out, I'll have to watch this shitshow again to understand any of what's going on.
So should you watch it?
If you're looking for a cheap fantasy story that's the bastard child of a lot of other more popular fantasy stories, go right on ahead. I've gotten to a point where I've seen/read a lot of content within the fantasy genre that I was just looking for something like this to watch. It's not particularly bad, but it is in no way shape or form particularly good. I think this analogy will sum it up--have you ever really been craving a certain type of food? You want it right now, but you don't have the patience/time to make it yourself and make it how you want, so instead, you just go to a fast-food joint and order a quick and easy version of that food. It's fine, there's nothing really special about it, but it satiates your desire for that food. That's this anime. It's cheap and easy if you want to watch a fantasy anime. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it, though.

For starters, I believe that if you can get through the first few episodes, the series is one of the best that you can watch. It's similar to a novel, where the change is slow, but compelling. Once through the little parts, it becomes fantastic.
So as I go into the full review, be aware that I'm writing this a few months after finishing it.
Story (9) - The problem with the story is that it's slow. That is the main problem, it's slow to start and tend to drag along. I believe it would have been best as
...
a shorter series, compacting the first five episodes into two or three. Similarly to Kemono no Souja Erin, for those who've seen it, it's a slow start but a great experience when you're into it. So my words of advice, push through the first few episodes and you'll have a good time.
Art (6) - My problem here, and which is why I deducted some points, is that I'm not a fan of CGI. I feel like the series would have been much better if it were done with 2d animation, or at least a mix of the two. CGI is something that is a niche within anime, as I'm sure you know, and for people who watched this just for ghibli, won't like it much. The CGI does get better later on, but all-in-all it's one of the things you have to put up with to start, and know it gets better further in.
Sound (10) - The soundtrack is something I really love within Goro's works, he's able to convey a large part of the story through music, which is something hard to master. The soundtrack is beautiful, and as is the same with the voice actors, at least in the Japanese version. The music is one of the best parts of the series, so that is a definite plus.
Character (10) - The characters are definitely what put this series so high up. Even the people that you're supposed to hate are endearing and you can't help but care for them. Even the minor characters have great stories to them. And if the minor characters are like this, try to imagine the main characters. Ronja is one of the most endearing characters that I've seen in a long time. The thing that is able to differentiate her from other Ghibli heroines is how much of a complex character she is. She's not some girl who has special powers, she is just a girl that loves and fights for what she believes in.
Enjoyment (8) - I think this would have been higher if the first few episodes were easier to get through. The rest of the series is fine, just the first five episodes drag on. For a lot of people, they will have dropped the anime before they're able to get to the meat of the story because of those first few episodes. Overall, it's a pretty enjoyable anime, though. It's very relaxing but compelling at the same time as well. One can't help but think about it even after the anime has ended.
Overall (9) - Like all longer anime, it has it's high and low points. I think this is one of Goro's best works from Ghibli, so if you have the time and willpower, I definitely recommend this anime. You won't be let down.
Extra - If you enjoyed this anime, I would really recommend Kemono no Souja Erin, likewise as well.
