Flip Flappers

The amount of similarities both of these anime share is almost unbelievable. Both FLCL (Tsurumaki, Kazuya) and Flip Flappers (Oshiyama, Kiyotaka) are personal passion projects that had most, if not all, creative decisions as far as the story and direction goes done by their respective directors. Both anime are original works build from the ground up, and in both cases the director of the shows had incredible creative freedom to implement anything that they found interesting into their series. Aside from staff background similarities, these two anime have a lot of things in common to their story. Both FLCL and Flip Flappers are simple narratives told in a very complex way. Both explore themes in similarly bizarre ways (FLCL tackles social themes like puberty, self-growth, adulthood, and coming of age experience; while Flip Flappers focuses mostly on sexuality and friendship, though both of these themes by nature will have things to say on puberty and self-growth as well), to the extent that some people may just dismiss such bizzare natures as an incoherent series of events with no real meaning (they do have a meaning). Also, both are intentionally vague to spark speculation and discussion among their fans. Speaking of their fans, both anime have a very loyal cult following that satisfy specific niches and such followings like to dissect every element carefully left to interpretation. They both have the symbolisms and depth for such dissection to be possible, which is an incredible merit. If you are reading this then you most likely have seen at least one of these shows (higher chances are that the one you have seen is FLCL as it is the most popular one). If you really liked it and can't find anything similar to it, give the other one a shot and I promise you will not be disappointed. Everything from the symbolisms, the countless references to pop culture and history, and the bizarre action packed animation can be found in its counterpart. I can safely say both are one hell of a ride.

At first they may look very different, but by watching just the first episode of both series the similarities in the story are noticible. Boku no Hero Academia and Little Witch Academia (similar sounding titles) feature a young, teenager who's dream is to become something that most thought they couldn't be (Deku wants to be a hero, Akko wants to be a witch). They are teenagers who are surrounded by people gifted from birth with special powers, but they themselves lack the ability those around him/her have. They are inspired to want to be a hero/witch by a person who is the best at what they do and that they admire since their childhood (Deku's inspiration is All Might, Akko's inspiration is Shiny Chariot). Both are a fun, excellent animated adventure anime that will have you at the edge of your seat. Sit back and enjoy the ride!

Both feature a protagonist who is struggling with depression because of the death of his loved ones and both main characters have a complicated relationship with their passions (Shigatsu has music, 3-gatsu has shogi), but these passions are not the main focus of the shows. Also, both protagonists meet people who change their lives for the better. They have similar color pallets and realistic characters. March Comes in Like a Lion has more unique visuals and better direction than Your Lie in April due to the very different animation studios and directors. Also YLIA has way more romance (3-gatsu being more of a slice-of-life series), but anyone can feel the similarities while watching one after having seen the other. Both are touching dramas that serves as a memorable experience for fans of the genre.

Orange

Both involve an adult in his/her 20s that wants to make things right and change his/her life in highschool. The difference between them is how they approach their highschool selves. In Orange, the main charcater contacts herself 10 years in the past with a time traveling letter. In ReLIFE, the main character becomes a highschooler again instead of contacting himself through time travel. ReLIFE doesn't really have actual time travel. Also they both have plenty of romance and drama, but Orange has way more of those while ReLIFE tends to focus more on comedy and not so much on the drama.
