Me and a good friend of mine did a movie night, as we occasionally do, and after watching the Movie (Makai Tensho, from 1981) i decided to show them the OVA also based on the same Novel (though taking much inspiration from the Ken Ishikawa manga).
As it happens, we got quite curious for the staff, as the intended punchline for the night was that the OVA ends without a conclusion - another dreaded "OVA cancelled early in its life" situation - but instead when clicking on the directors name we stumbled upon a name for an OVA that took us quite by surprise:

Hot Space Cowboys.

It ... was a name that instantly piqued interest: is this gay porno? The tag for it said it contained Pornography so that questioned was answered quite quickly, but the alternate name (as present on this page, and everywhere else) almost made us question even the veracity of the claim.

So we decided to watch it.

What was at first a pretty regular movie night, with a really good Special effects Jidaigeki and a really well animated but cut short OVA back to back, turned into possibly one of the best nights of all time. Usually for a review you would describe the actual contents of the Series watched, but in this case i believe this might be best experienced blind: The actual Mecha fights are actually quite nice looking for what they are, and the plot progression is nothing but outlandish. I've not laughed this much in quite some time, and the final minute is one of the greatest punchlines ever put into a gay porn OVA, probably. Reccomended!

Another OVA that (allegedly) was cut short in production, loosly based on an equally cut short manga by noted mangaka Tony Takezaki; this time directed by the man behind M.D Geist. Of the alleged planned 9 episodes, what is here is another beautifully violent slice of animated fiction. Over the course of the five episodes, Genocyber racks up what could possibly be the highest prospected kill count of any Animated feature, i assure you the title is no exaggeration. I would of course be be-miss to not mention the soundtrack, which leads to probably one of the most jarring disconnects between visual and audio you ... will probably ever see; its really good however, put it on your workout mix. If you're unsure, just watch the first episode, its the longest of the series and works rather substantially as a one-off. The stories after are both Two-Parters and really do not connect outside of Genocyber itself and a theme of mass destruction. Overall i would however recommend it in full, especially if you love high detail violence.

We were ROBBED, Kakubros. Of the originally planned 10 episodes, only 2 ever made it into production, a crying shame for a masterwork such as Kakugo. Heavily Inspired by the Tokus of the time, mixed with the then popular post apocalyptic setting and harsh violence, Kakugo no Susume in its original incarnation as a manga stands tall against many of its contemporaries, even today. The pure spirit it emanates is hard to describe, but if you're a high power level individual you will surely notice it. The OVA sadly did not get to live up to this standard, as it was cancelled without a real ... reason. The parts it does adapt, while still cool, are sadly too early into the manga to truly tell of the IMPACT that the manga ends up leaving later on. Interestingly, it does adapt the flashbacks that originally appeared much later into the original source material, perhaps for more immediate context. I believe what is here is still worth watching, no less because of its killer soundtrack; though now it serves more as a "could have been", and an AD for the actual manga, which you should read. Do not believe the anti-hype.

This motherfucker right here, this is the good shit. This shit goes hard, it rules.
M.D Geist is pure artistic spirit, even its faults deserve praise, the little that there are.
40k fucking WISHES it could have space marines as cool as Geist, the ultimate warrior.
There will never be another anime like this and its a fucking crime. PERIOD.
You will see people argue how its an overhyped, "so bad its good" ancient piece of transitionary animation fiction, a relic of the past to be forgotten. And i tell you now, that those people are not to be trusted. They would tell you that Violence Jack is total ... garbage; after which they throw the tape into the river. Would you trust a man like that? Because you should'nt, they the are the enemy of art. They will praise Miyazaki and Oishii for all eternity, who while respectable artists, are to professional to truly create something as unique as M.D Geist.
