All my scores/reviews are subjective/personal af so feel free to agree/disagree! Your opinions are valid!
NON-SPOILER SECTION
My opinion on the Story:
Plot (+1): I found it really interesting and engaging.
Characters (+1): Well-established and they develop throughout the story. Something that I truly appreciate.
Tone (+0.5): Sometimes they’d throw in a joke or two that made the whole scene feel jarring, especially in the earlier episodes, but nothing to make me hate it.
Consistency (+1): Like many shows, they give you a nice happy and funny tone in the beginning before they delve into the darker tone of the later half. However, this show gives glimpses and foreshadowing of
...
what will unfold later, so it’s not a complete tonal whiplash.
Did it well? I feel like it could’ve been done better. Lessening the amount of jokes in the beginning and a bit more foreshadowing would’ve been nice.
PERSONAL Enjoyment Factors:
Characters (like/love?) (+2): The squad of characters were very cute and I ended up liking every single one of them by the end of the series! I especially liked Chrono and Rosette’s relationship, they are so cute.
Soundtrack (OP/ED) (+0.5): I enjoyed the opening theme and rarely skipped it.
Engagement (+1): There is little to no filler, but even if there was, I liked the characters so much that I didn’t mind, so it was pretty engaging.
Ending (+1): Uhm, yes, I liked the ending… More in the spoilers section.
Overall: 8
SPOILER SECTION
Characters (like/love?): EPISODE 18 DAMNIT. I WASN’T EXPECTING TO CRY?? I definitely wasn’t expecting such a romantic moment that becomes heartbreaking once you realize Chrono doesn’t keep his promise??? Satella definitely deserved more screen time imo so that we felt her death a little more.
Ending: OMG, the ending. It emotionally destroyed me. I’ve already fallen in love with the characters and now each of them die and we’re left to grieve with Azmaria, the baby of the squad T^T. LIKE WAT. It broke my heart… but I sorta liked it.
Spoilers for Cowboy Bebop:
This series was similar to Cowboy Bebop in which it makes you fall in love with the squad right before they drop off one by one. (It’s debatable whether or not Spike kicks the can at the end, though). Obviously, they are still very different series, but I got similar vibes.

NON-SPOILER SECTION
Plot (+1): The world-building was cool. Everything seemed to flow and there was not really any filler.
Characters (+1): The characters were well established, however, pretty generic.
Tone (+1): Action shounen with comedic moments in there. It built up tension when it needed to be there.
...
Consistency (+1): Yeah, it was pretty consistent.
Did it well? It got pretty boring with all the info-dumping.
PERSONAL Enjoyment Factors:
Characters (like/love?) (+0.5): I liked the characters in the beginning… but nothing that I loved. I really wish that the main character, Mimiko was scrapped as she served no purpose but to be a self-insert. She was boring. Jirou had a bit more personality, but not much more. I really wish that more focus was given to the other vampire characters because they were really interesting and had really cool powers that could’ve had more potential with more screen time. I especially liked Zelman. Poor Kotarou, I wanted him to have more development but he just became the generic little brother character.
Soundtrack (OP/ED): Nothing that I really enjoyed or would listen to outside of watching the show.
Engagement (+0.5): Too much info-dumping, they sit around and talk... a lot.
Ending: Read-the-manga ending, so beware if you still decide to watch this. It felt like they wanted a season 2 but was never renewed.
Overall: 5
SPOILER SECTION
Characters (like/love?): Kotarou (Jirou’s little brother) being the reincarnation of Alice (Jirou’s former lover) was very SUS to me. I did not enjoy that ‘twist’. Sorta makes the title itself a lie since they aren’t really brothers.
Ending: It was a pretty cute ending, but I guess now that it doesn’t have a season 2, it’s all left to the imagination. With this type of ending to the first season, I can only assume that the series finale would have a happy ending, too. Meaning that they’d find some loop hole so that Jirou stays alive or something. Obviously, they’re building up his and Mimiko’s relationship.

NON-SPOILER SECTION
My opinion on the Story:
Plot (+0.5): I thought it was decent, not great, not super bad. It got pretty crazy towards the end. Definitely would’ve helped if we got more development in the beginning.
Characters (+0.5): The main duo was interesting; their arcs were pretty generic. Could’ve used more development, but decent enough.
Tone (+1): The tone fit with the show, Pretty serious and action-packed. Has some funny one liners here and there.
Consistency (+1): Yes, the show remained pretty consistent up until the second to last episode. Got some crazy body horror going on that surprised me. Luckily, I still found it
...
interesting and enjoyable and not a turn-off. Explained more in the spoiler section.
Did it well? Could have done better. Since I almost dropped it, I think they didn’t do it well enough.
PERSONAL Enjoyment Factors:
Characters (like/love?) (+1): I really enjoyed the main duo. I was interested in the rest of the squad, too. Too bad they didn’t get enough screen time.
Soundtrack (OP/ED) (+0.5): I like the opening theme. The ending theme starts off iffy but I do like the guitar.
Engagement (+0.5): Because of the lack of development in the beginning, I wasn’t as engaged, leading me to almost dropping the series. I stuck with it and it got engaging, but not super engaging.
Ending (+1): I liked the ending. More in Spoiler Section.
Overall: 6
SPOILER SECTION
I wish the English dub pronounced Voomer with a ‘V’ rather than with a ‘B’ because it took me out of some scenes.
Plot: I personally liked the twist that Hans turned out to be a Voomer.
Tone: I couldn’t help but chuckle when Hans asked, “Is it true? Am I really a (B)oomer?” Obviously, the writers had no possible clue that the word ‘Boomer’ would be a meme like 20+ years later, but it makes it even funnier.
Characters: Hans and Kenji are bromance goals. When Hans asked Kenji if he knew what he really was and Kenji was like, “You’re my partner,” I was literally saying, “Aww…” It was very sweet. I also liked the ending of one episode (can’t remember which exactly) where Kenji and Kyoko go to a park and he listens to her play the violin and it’s the two of them. That was another moment where I said, “Aww…” it was very romantic.
Ending: I personally liked the creepier aspects of the ending with all the body horror and stuff. I lowkey got chills when the ‘new’ Hans came out with a gun and a red suit. Ugh, it was so sad when Kenji had to shoot Hans T^T. When I started watching I really didn’t expect the series to end with Hans dying, I thought it’d be a happy ending, but it was bittersweet.

NON-SPOILER SECTION
Plot (+0.5):
Considering all the production limitations, I’d say its very well crafted. You gotta pay attention to each and every line because its so condensed. When I was younger, I’d zone out because of the boring talking and talking, but I got older and realized that set ups are important and ya gotta listen to what is being discussed to understand wtf is going on.
Characters (+0.5):
For a 2 hour movie, they had to make sure characterization had to be shown through each movement, each expression and line of dialogue
...
and it works! Of course, the characterization had to be condensed anyways, so it doesn’t get a full point.
Tone (+1):
The first five minutes tell you what you’re in for: violence/gore, rebellion, angry teenage boys and mysterious government operations…
Consistency (+1):
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “dat animation doh.”
Did it well? (+1):
Uh, yeah. I mean the fact that many people (including me) have seen this multiple times means that its done things right
Characters (like/love?) (+2):
I find Tetsuo to be a really tragic character and I sympathize with him. Kaneda is pretty fun to watch (even though he is a simp). Again, their characterization had to be condensed due to the run time. I would have loved to see the film explore their relationship more.
Soundtrack (+1.5):
Many songs in the soundtrack only get like 20 seconds in the film but if you take the time to listen to the actual soundtrack of the film, get ready for some spooks. I definitely was not ready for that, ngl. I thought I was done with this film spooking me when I was in middle school! Guess not! Explained more in the spoilers section.
Engagement (+2):
DAT ANIMATION DOH. I’m an artist myself and I just marvel at all that hard work they’ve put into this film. So much appreciation. I get that not everyone will see it the same way, but this is my review :3
Ending (+0.5):
Eh. Explained more in the spoilers section.
Overall: 10
SPOILER SECTION
Tone:
Lemme just say there’s a reason why scenes like the hospital daydream/hallucination scene is iconic/memorable asf
Characters:
Kaori deserves better. She didn’t deserve any of the crap she got in the movie omfg. Kaneda's a big simp. Kei got sidelined as fast as Kaneda simped for her. For a movie called Akira we only see Akira for like 5 seconds. Enough of the negative. I really enjoyed and rooted for Colonel Shikishima. I would’ve loved more backstory to the Espers since I found them interesting. I found all characters interesting tbh, just not fleshed out, which makes sense because of the run time. So that’s why I didn’t give it a full point score.
Soundtrack:
Tetsuo’s Theme is the one that haunts me. I think it’s because its lyrics are so sad…
Engagement:
I’ve seen this movie as a kid (mistakes have been made) and images like Tetsuo hallucinating that his guts spill out on the concrete, Tetsuo rebuilding his arm, Tetsuo’s transformation scene… (poor guy) all stuck with me. I was able to remember it as I got older and did some research to find the movie again and re-watch and experience and actually grasp wtf was going on. Not only that, but I’ve since revisited it multiple times! (Which I rarely do for movies EVEN with the nostalgia factor). If a movie can do that for me…its engaging asf.
Ending:
Not a fan of Deus Ex Machina sorta endings. But I get it, Otomo hadn’t written the ending for the actual manga yet so he had to pull something. Tbh I wouldn’t even know how to end this kind of story, but what we got was still iconic.
