Both Magi and Children of the Whales are dramatic fantasies, with mysterious, powerful beings trying to change the course of the future. Another thing that I adore about both series is that their worldbuilding sucked me in immediately! Despite having different tones (Magi is more humorous, and Children of the Whales is more dramatic), their worlds are both concrete and shown instead of told...most of the time. Both protagonists are young boys trying to find their way in a confusing, sand-covered world, and both have very silent, closed off female friends with emotional backstories. They also share supernatural and human companions that have unclear motives, lending a surprising amount of intrigue to their plots. To conclude, don't write off Children of the Whales just because it's a shoujo, it doesn't feel like a typical shoujo at all! In the same way, Magi never felt like a typical shounen to me. Both are very emotionally dynamic stories that I love (and wish there were more seasons of).
