(Anime Only - have never read the source material)
Another spin on the Yarinaoshi-LN-Fantasy setting, this show is an unimaginative cobble of the same tired-ass tropes without any real coherence in the world or characters portrayed. It feels like the MC is speed running his new life while dragging the three supporting characters along with half-baked explanations of the objective, and none of them have enough agency of their own to act or even think independently. Two of them exist to ask obvious questions and to act as sounding boards for exposition, not just for the MC, but for everyone around them as well. The last

of the three...exists ig.
Worse off, there is just far too much talking compared to what is actually happening on screen. When I can literally turn off my screen and listen to the show while still comprehending what (little) is happening, why portray the story through a visual medium in the first place? Explaining everything that is going on is unfair to the viewers because it takes away the effort to comprehend and insults the viewer's intelligence.
Or perhaps there's so much exposition because it gives them an excuse to sit on a still frame in the middle of an action sequence for 6 whole seconds: the MC is having a telepathic conversation while simultaneously eavesdropping on the enemy's telepathic conversation and commenting that as well, and NO ONE IS ACTUALLY FIGHTING. When the action finally gets back to being action, it lacks punch and variation. The fighting is stiff without an ounce of dynamic movement. Sure the hits SOUND big, but without the visuals to back it up, its a classic case of bark vs bite.
With these kinds of shows, I intentionally lower my standards and expectations to even attempt to enjoy it, and most of the sub-7 star shows on MAL give me at least a little mileage with this approach. But with this show on and a cozy, immersive setup to watch it, I STILL found myself gravitating to doing literally ANYTHING ELSE (I'm writing this as I watch episode 10). It can't hold my attention and, honestly, doesn't deserve it. Only reason I'm watching it to the end is that I'm a completionist at heart and hardly ever drop shows unless its absolutely unwatchable. Even then, this show could very easily have stayed in my On-Hold purgatory indefinitely.
Flimsy characters, lazy world-building, flavorless dialogue, a plot like swiss cheese, basic sound design, lifeless and excruciatingly static visuals.
"Crest of Failure," and how.
