The similarities start by comparing the setting of each anime. Darker than black revolves mainly around the contractors and their connection to the mafia, somehow I even would compare this to batman (even though I've never watched it through). In Durarara likewise there are the gangs and the struggle of each character against it.

This is simple since on the one hand there is the port mafia and on the other hand you have the mafia in darker than black led by wang shao tang. Supernatural elements are given to the contractors in darker than black as well as the actors in stray dogs. Overall personally I got the same vibe while watching these anime even though I didn't like darker than black as much as stray dogs but that doesn't change the fact that both anime are comparable.

Both start in a very incomprehensible way which however isn't a bad thing at all. It adds to their mysterious nature and challenges the viewer to try to set the pieces together so that everything makes sense. Furthermore either of these revolve around a female protagonist that is struggling against an external supernatural force. If you like anime that demand 100% of your concentration you won't be disappointed by choosing one of these.

The main reason that connects these anime is obviously it's genre 'mystery'. Well it's commonly known that there are anime with sometimes very misplaced genre but you may be able to trust someone like me who's very much into anime with a chilling atmosphere in a mature sense. Meaning if you like interpreting and the attempt of figuring out what's gonna happen next or how every aspect of the anime connects together then you'll certainly be able to enjoy either of these anime.
