A few mild spoilers ahead.
I was really hoping this was going to be so bad it was good. Instead it was just bad. Really, really bad. I've been a long-time fan of Dragon Ball; I grew up watching it as a kid so the series has a lot of sentimental value for me, and I was hoping to get at least something out of watching this one. I wasn't really expecting anything from this film after I saw the trailers, and my assumptions were unfortunately correct.
Story: Pretty generic, even as far as Dragon Ball movies go. The premise, however, is pretty simple and easy
...
to follow, and the movie quickly establishes what's going on and why without too much unnecessary fluff, even if the first half is a little slow. That being said, it's Dragon Ball, and most people are probably here to see some cool fights. Any storyline is just a convenient vehicle to get us to said fights ASAP. Unfortunately, those fights really aren't that exciting, especially compared to recent Dragon Ball entries. There are also a lot of really stupid moments, such as Bulma and Piccolo conveniently forgetting to wish Vegeta and Goku back to earth to deal with the androids an then mentioning it immediately after wasting 2/3 of their wishes on gags that are more cringy than funny. It just felt like such a contrived way to keep Goku and Vegeta out of the plot. Not to mention that when Gohan gets his big transformation scene towards the end of the movie, they literally copy-pasted the lead-up and animation from when Gohan went Super Saiyan 2 back during the Cell Games. It's only one of the most iconic Dragon Ball moments ever, and they thought no one would notice? Thanks, I hate it.
Characters: This movie focuses a lot more on the side characters, rather than long-time staples like Goku and Vegeta. I did appreciate that, since it's nice to get time with other characters and give them some time in the spotlight. Of course, we do spend some time with Goku and Vegeta, which honestly felt like padding and a distraction from what was actually supposed to be going on in this movie, which was a drag. Most of the new characters introduced (the villains) are unbearably bland, but I did like the Gammas in both character and design. Cell Max, the final antagonist, was just a mindless, angry piñata for our heroes to beat on (basically just a lamer Broly).
Animation: I'm not against CGI on principle, but I do think it needs to be done right, and this just didn't do it for me. It wasn't terrible, but something about it just felt a little cheap and I really didn't like it. I think this is a major point of contention for a lot of people going into this film, and it just wasn't my cup of tea.
Soundtrack: It was fine. Nothing really stood out to me that was worth commenting on. It serves its purpose and is fitting, but that's really about it, honestly.
Final thoughts: I really did not enjoy this movie. For fans looking for a fun story, you won't find it here. Even if you're just looking to sit down for some cool action, there are so many better options out there across the rest of the franchise. I got a few laughs out of this one, but was otherwise completely underwhelmed. TLDR: Even if you're a big fan of Dragon Ball, skip this one. It's not worth your time.

If you liked the first season of JJK, you'll probably like this movie. If you didn't like the first season of JJK, there's probably nothing here to convince you otherwise. That being said, this is an extremely faithful adaptation of Volume 0 of the manga, down to the minor details. There are a few extra bits thrown in here and there, mainly from the inclusion of other characters (think Nanami, Mechamaru, Mei Mei, etc.) who weren't in the original story. These additions are used to help expand the fight scenes and give them more substance, which I am all for.
While I do think the story
...
here is a bit less exciting than the rest of the manga proper, it is well-told and neatly wrapped up by the time the credits role. It helps flesh out some of the backstory for Geto, one of the series' main antagonists, and of course Yuta, who reappears in the manga at a later date, but is by no means mandatory viewing to enjoy the rest of JJK, like the Mugen Train movie is for Demon Slayer. If you skip this, you might miss out on a bit of extra context, but it shouldn't change a lot in the long run.

I'm going to be a bit biased here because this was my favorite arc in the manga, but DAMN is this a fantastic adaptation! If you liked the first season even a little, then I would recommend watching this one as well, as it brings everything enjoyable about the first arc and cranks it up to 11. I don't think I have ever seen animation this good, ever. My jaw literally dropped during the fight scenes in the last couple of episodes. It's real good, guys. Real good.
I've seen a lot of people criticize this series as being weak on characters and plot while being
...
carried by its animation. Is there any truth to that? Yeah, I can definitely agree to some extent, as a lot of what's going on in Demon Slayer is pretty generic, standard shounen fare. However, I'm willing to excuse all of that because I don't feel like this show is pretending to be anything that it isn't. It's here mostly for action and comedy, with a little bit of emotional drama on the side, but not much more. And that's fine, because what *is* here is very well executed, in my opinion.
I think that Demon Slayer certainly has its flaws, but they were far outweighed by the positives, and overall I had a hell of a good time watching this season.

Anything that revolves around best-girl Kumoko: 10/10.
Everything else in this show: 3/10.
It's a shame because I want to enjoy this show even more than I currently do, but I barely care about any of the other characters other than the MC. The other characters and their story is pretty generic and bland; if it's all the show was about I would have dropped it after episode 1. To be fair, I'm not a big fan of isekai in general, but I'm hoping it gets less dull. The world building isn't very good, half the cast is boring, but I'll be damned if I'm not cheering
...
