"The best way to write a realistic romance is to first be in love. Everyone can write a love story from their life." - Lida Ayano
Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (The Pet Girl of Sakurasou) is possibly one of my favourite romantic comedies that I have ever seen, and believe me when I say I have seen a lot of romantic comedies. That being said, I do recommend this show very strongly.
STORY: 8/10
On paper, Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo has a fairly boring premise. Sorata Kanda is forced to live in a dorm with some rather quirky characters although he plans on leaving as soon
...
as possible, and then one day, an artistic genius named Mashiro Shiina comes to live there too. Except, whoopsie, she has no idea how to take care of herself and Sorata has to take care of her.
It doesn't seem like the most interesting thing to watch at first, and honestly, it shouldn't have been. But I still had an absolutely amazing time with this show! Hajime Kamoshida handled the manga as well as the series extremely well, turning what should have been a bland and boring into something that kept me entertained and emotionally invested the entire way through.
I can still see why people wouldn't necessarily find enjoyment in the plot, so like, there's that, but hey, this is my review, and I'm allowed to have my degenerate internet opinion.
ART: 9/10
The art is this series is absolutely gorgeous, not gonna lie. There were times when it seemed a bit flat and maybe a bit uninteresting, but god, the backgrounds were gorgeous and the character designs were gorgeous and just. It's gorgeous.
SOUND: 9/10
As someone who doesn't know much about sound, I really loved the voice acting in this series.
Yoshitsugu Matsuoka in particular, who played Sorata, completely won me over with his performance, though Mari Nakatsu and Natsumi Takamori (who played Nanami and Misaki, respectively) also blew me away.
The background music wasn't exactly what you might call 'memorable' but I felt like it fit nicely with the themes and tone, and I really liked both of the ending themes. The openings weren't my cup of tea, but they were nice enough. I ended up skipping them most of the time.
CHARACTERS: 10/10
I think character writing, or, to be more specific, GREAT character writing, is where Hajime Kamoshida really excels with Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo. He has a knack for characters that sound crazy on paper, but who feel like real people in the narrative.
Misaki Kamiisuga, in particular, doesn't seem like the kind of character who would work out the way she did, and while she was a bit sudden, she felt extremely real in comparison to her hyperactive and altogether crazy concept. Her constant chase after Jin, as well as her emotionally preparing herself to get rejected by him, I felt those moments.
And Sorata Kanda also held up. For a genre dominated by protagonists who are blander than, like, a beige wall or something, Sorata felt like he had a personality. Or, at the very least, like he was developing one throughout the series. Especially his jealousy of Mashiro, which grows until he can't really hide it. Altogether, he could have been a stronger character, but I liked him a lot.
As for the others, yeah, it would really just be me spitting out more praise. I love the damn characters, and I love the relationships they had with each other, and the way they protect each other but still hurt each other, God I love these characters--
ENJOYMENT: 10/10
I bawled my eyes out on episode 14 for God's sake. I felt so attached to these characters, and really, I just want more of this show. I also cried a lot during the last 3 episodes. Seriously. Non-stop tears. I absolutely loved this series.
