I consider myself a somewhat rare breed. an american that like Saint Seiya... some of us are out there, but it's kinda hard to find others when the VAST VAST majority of any videos related to the anime are in spanish, french or any other latin language that isn't english. this series is very big in latin america. a freind of mine often says that its almost a religion in Latin America. but i'm not here to judge them or talk about the wonderful 80s anime. im here to talk about something i never thought i would talk about....Saint Seiya; Omega. oh boy... let's do
...
it.
The Story; 5/10
Omega is a continuation of the 80s story if i recall correctly. Seiya (who is now the Sagittarius saint) leaves his legacy to the next generation of Saint who the show now focuses on. im okay with that, to see the next generation of a story can be fine and at times really great....when done right. to my memory, Naruto is the only other anime i know to continue it's story to the next generation in the form of "Boruto", as swell as that is, in my eyes, Boruto is a fat let down, lame new characters, ok plot but the execution sucked imo so...i was rather off put. Saint seiya Omega is no different in my eyes. the story its self isnt very interesting, or original (evil god wants to take earth but some awesome warriors with a good god prevent eveil god from doing so, lose a few good charcters and the end). thats pretty much the same plot as the original 80s anime. because it is. and it's Omegas story as well. if you havent seen a story like this or anything similar, then it's fine. there is a clear motive with reason and there is a foreseeable goal to reach. but again, the 80s anime already did this. and it did it better imo too.
Art; 2/10
oh no......oh god no! how???!!!! how can this be??? how can a show made in 2012 look WORSE THAN THE 1986 VERSION???? yeah the color is cleaner, yeah its got that normal resolution but.... the character designs..... they look awful...the Pegasus cloth it's....oh no... the Cloths are always described and designed to look metallic. but these look like theyre made from plastic and nylon... not just the pegasus cloth, but ALL THE CLOTHS LOOK BAD! the Sagittarius cloth...the wings look like they are pointy metal doritos... the cloths and other armor look...eww. the only design that was respectable was the "sagittarius God Cloth" it looks similar to the original aside from some parts lokking bigger like the pauldrons. the wings are significantly improved too. but it doesn't look...godly. not like the ones from Soul of Gold. those designs were clean, sexy, fitting for the gold cloths. i simply do not like the art style. to me, it doesnt scream saint seiya
sigh, before i give myself another big headache, what about the animation? surely the animation has improved, the fights are more fluent, and the character work is more refined too right? WRONG!!! a common issue found in saint seiyas fight seens (80s anime and manga included) was how static the fights were, they wouldn't show alot of movement or often never moved position. it was like there feet were glued to the ground. now to be completely fair, animating fight scenes with cloth designs that were elaborate and complex, i can imagine are very very hard and time consuming. i understand and respect that. just look soul of gold, yeah the gold saints and their God cloths were moving fast and and all, but there models barely moved, and i understand that trying to animate designs like Sagittarius, virgo, and taurus for example would be a nightmare to animate, so thats fair. Omega does not get the same pass though. the animation is sloppy alot of the time (somehow worse than the 80s animation which is a feat in of it's self), questionable at some and even decent in a few cases, but the fight scenes are all more static than the 80s counterpart and the animation quality is very inconsistent. now this could be because the team animating it are new, and this is their first go, if so, thats explainable. but, that doesnt excuse the fact that the designs are far more simplistic than other entries for the series. the art, is poor.
sound; 7/10
if there is one aspect i can at least say Omega does well, it's the sound. the openings are all very unique and different in their own way. and some of the music in the show is quite enjoyable. compared to the music used in the Asterisk War it's not as thrilling or epic, but it's still nice, but i wouldn't call them memorable. it's a shame i have so little to say for this category, the sound design is fine. its very good. but honestly thats all i can say.
characters; 3/10
oh boy... where do i even begin.... ill start with the positives. Seiya, our new and alive sagittarius saint, has matured and grown quite abit since the 80s anime and the hades chapters. we see him now as a careful, confident, inspring, still has a bit of his old personality which i do think is neat and great man the new saints can look up to. some of the new saints are also quite notable, Yuna, one of Kougas friends, has a well laid out backstory and is actually quite endearing to me... yeah. the new Aries Saint Kiki, who was by Mu's side is also well written, following the past aries saints legacy while making one for his own. and Taurus Harbinger is rather interesting. he's kind of a rebel with Athenas saints and is rather more direct and bruttish...well he is a taurus saint after all.
now for the bad. Kouga, wether he is Seiyas and Saoris son or not, he is very very bland blonde and boring. always saying he will save athena, only to get his ass handed to him and be saved by the power of love and frienship. really. this is annoying. if the good guys always win, it gets boring, and thats what happens with kouga.let's take Seiya for example. headstrong like kouga is, gets his ass beaten down, hard, really hard. ina pinch, the gold cloth comes to him for a massive power boost. kinda like the super seiyan before the super seiyan. and when things got really bad, he got the pegasus god cloth in elysion. he took down the 2 minor gods. then he gets capped again by hades. so... seiya has his moments of being an underdog. kouga though.... isnt as umm...gifted, Kouga doesnt get a gold cloth or a god cloth to aid him, i mean, he gets the omega cloth at the very end so ill give him that, but before the omega cloths stuff, he often needed someone else to finish off someone, or the "power of love and friendship". the problem is that we've seen this type of charcter done before but kouga is done worse than many other sadly.
Saori Kido, the reincarnation of Athena, the greek goddess of war is not very well written either. she's like Zelda in a way, powerful being who should be able to look our for herself, ends up being a princess needing to be rescued alot. "thank you for your service, seiya, but athena is another castle." there are so many other characters here that i could lay waste upon, but for the interest of time, im not gonna bother. overall, some charcters are somewhat neat, but many others are just not pleasent to think about or deal with.
Enjoyment; 3/10
this show had some nice moments but were very far and few between alot of annoying dialogue, bad animation and art style, and a lame ass plot. im very dissapointed....
overall; 3/10
i really wanted to like this show. i really did, i genuinely started optimistic about it, hoping it would be a fantastic adventure like the original 80s anime, but hope that it would differentiate its self in a cool and unique way. but it didnt, this show to me was a continuation reboot with a worse art style, bad writing, and a copy paste story progression. it was very similar to the 80s story and it became very bland and predictable very quick.

When this show came out in 2015, it had a "rival" if you could put it that way, and it was a show called "The Chivalry of a Failed Knight" at first this show started weaker than the asterisk war but over time it showed what it truly was at it's core and eventually beat out the asterisk war by the end of the season. despite its bigger fanbase and higher rating, the asterisk war is the show that would continue with a second season...too many people's distaste. The asterisk war didnt have a strong footing in the base so
...
to see it get a second season was weird for many, after the performance the first season gave us, many ignored the second season, but the very few who stayed and the even fewer(like me) who watched it later without hearing anything about it watched it, might say it improved...mabye?
if you know what the story is so far given by the first season or light novel then you could say that it was ...improved? i felt that the story was easier to follow than the first season probably because i watched the first season. although splitting the seasons in 2 like that was not a good idea on their part. if they were gonna have season 2 continue right where season 1 left off, they should have made it into a double season anime where it would be easier to catch up. not wait 1 season where everyone following would get confused, but i digress. The story was easier to follow and in my opinion was handled better than the first season. it even got kinda dark near the end. I don't want to go into alot of detail but you can imagine that it continues on the pheonix festa so you can imagine what the end result is considering the tropes this show has piled up. if this show was made in to a double season anime, i would give the story a 6 or 7 but having that break in the middle and continuing right where season 1 left off was a bad idea so i dropped it to a 5 which is still better than last season but still, some plot points are still not explained very well or at all so to improve the score, the story needs to go into more detail with proper explanation. but i guess this will have to do.
Now i don't need to explain this whole Art section part much, A1 Pictures + Anime adaptation = (mostly)beautiful art, designs, animation, fan service, and overall asthetics. A1 has a high budget with their anime for the most part. Just look at Sword Art Online, that show made alot of money. even though it's not too good...anyways this anime has a really cool asthetic of the asterisk( 6 sides 6 schools) it has a very big hexagon fetish if you can't tell. it's really unique. not to mention the fights here this season have also really improved. there is a lot of subtle detail in the first fight and it was one of the "Woah that was sick!" moments in the season and there aren't really that many. some, but not alot. Overall though, the art is fantastic! the good train doesn't stop there either!
Now as a musicien (saxophone and drummer primarily) i say that the music is AWESOME! if you call this music bad, you either hate this series a lot, dont like music at all, or you don't like EDM. which is ok. the ending song "Ai No Uta" by Chisuga Haruka is fantastic. further boosting the music is Swedish musicien Rasmus Faber. a man whoinspires my music to this day. his work here on both seasons are absolutley incredible! the opening is also very strong. sung by the same singer from the first seasons opening "Brand New World" i wish i didn't forget her name because she is also very strong in her work. so yes, if you can't tell, the asterisk war has my favorite soundtrack of any anime, which some will be dissapointed and vise versa. what isn't exactly spectacular in this show however is next.
while the characters are in a sense improved (if you know the story) as they have had themselves develop over last season. they are still bland and not very intruiging. what i hate most here however, is the introduction to many other characters (who i will not mention for specific reasons). now you may be asking, "whats so bad about new characters unless they suck of course?" here is whats bad. These new characters are given small roles and little screentime, when they are actually SOME OF THE MOST GODDAMN IMPORTANT CHARACTERS IN THE STORY TO DATE!!! sure they may have small roles now but you wouldnt know how important they are if the show isn't given a 3rd season or you havent read the light novel which i assume most havent. Some of them are even Powerful and or key characters later. I understand this is their introduction to the series. but if you are not gonna continue the show (which i'd assume many are happy to know about) you might as well not introduce them at all. yes you can read the novel, but very few are likley to do it. it hurts because some of them are really cool and among my favorites but it sucks to not see them develop further than a mere episode or two. in short, Yes the characters we have are better and more developed but the introduction to new and important characters getting little to no screentime is very serious especially with no continuation.
overall, the second season the The Asterisk War is improved and stronger than it's first one. the story is more clear, it actually IS a story, the characters are more developed and still retains the strengths of the first season. Sadly though, the damage has been done. the first season left a bitter taste in many peoples mouths, not to mention DigiBro's review hit the show even harder. The shows rival "The Chivalry of a Failed Knight" would surpass it and sadly get no second season while this show did. after what everyone saw, many would not go near this one and understandably so. but for those who stayed, they would see a small improvement or none at all.
When i think about it , i enjoyed this show because i can see what it's trying to be. on paper it's just another fantasy superhuman school tournament anime. But the further you dive into it's lore, you would be suprised at what this show/ Light Novel can offer. yes it's filled with tropes, yes it has annoying harem traits even though its not really much of a harem, yes it gets bland. this series like many others is by no means perfect but more so than others. what the anime gives us is another blatant school tournament anime with many tropes and predictable characters and story lines. the same can be said for the light novel, but at least the novel gives us more detail, explanation, better pacing and all other categories. A1 has this tendancy to put out anime almost like they get mass produced. meaning that while they put out anime fast, the quality can be questionable at times. and it seems this show is no different. i want to see this series do well. i really do. even if i am one of the few who actually support it. but this series has potential, it might have even been better if it was taken in by another anime studio. A1 may be able to get the art right but they need to work on the story aspect more as well. it's because of these reasons it gets an 8 from me.
Now, I mentioned that this season improved, and it did. however it did NOT improve ENOUGH. i gave this show an 8. which VERY generous. but it doesn't quite deserve that 8. but not a 7 either. if you are still reading this review the real score for me is a 7.5. so here is what i would do to give this show an 8..
1. Make series a double season. the show would have better pacing and the story connects better if there was no break inbetween.
2. Either give new characters screen time or don't introduce them at all. very simple enough said
3.Offer more in depth explanations for certain lore aspects so they are less confusing. also simple.
4.Give characters more depth in their backstory and if the Mc has a harem, give the girls a reason for liking the MC. don't just make them clingy just because, give them a reason at least aside from being a childhood friend or being related.
5. slow the pacing and keep it steady so viewers understand what goes on in the show. this is very important, the story how it's given is very bland and one-sided, so critical points in the shows plot progression become very confusing.
These are my points on how to fix the series problems so that it gets an 8. until then, it has a lot of work to do. i want to see this series do well and i feel that these issues i pointed out will help it improve further and hopefully give you the reader a clearer explanation to this series. if not, there are other people out their i'm sure who feel the same as me wo can even provide better explanations to the show than me, im only one person afterall. I can only hope that the series can show it's true colors. i hope you find this review helpful at least.

Compared to others...MANY OTHERS i should add, i went into this anime blind. this was the first anime i watched to learn about seasonal anime. before hand i only knew the major or classics ex.(naruto, bleach, one piece, rurouni kenshin, etc.) after i finished it i watched a guy called digibro on youtube rant on this show. And many of the stuff he said was right. but i felt like he really over did it. but once this vid came up everyone started rampaging on this anime. So, here we are 3 years later, does it deserve all the hate its received? well lets look
...
at it.
the story is....uhh...well it sucks. But it IS trying to get your attention. and at CERTAIN points it does that. Not very often, but it does occasionaly, the story felt to me a little rushed and was very predictable. it is a story and the fact that it can be intersting somewhat gives it a 4.
Now, if there is one thing i absolutley loved about this anime, it is the next two categories.
First off the art is AMAZING! i loved the designs and art of many of the buildings, character designs, weapons, animation, and effects. many of them were beautiful and made my jaw drop a few times. the animation is smooth and fluid, the art is crisp, clear and exciting, the fight scenes were beautiful, and some well executed (some better than others) i guess i should not be suprised on that note since A1 did the art and adaptaion of the light novel. still, for an anime, it's pretty awesome!
Sound wise i'm just gonna say it. GODDAMN EPIC AND BEAUTIFUL AND TECHY AND JUST AAAAHHHHHHH all at the same time. I'm a musician, a drummer, saxophonist, flutist and bassist. i know good music and sound when i hear it. And the opening and ending of this anime represent that better than anything else. the sound effects are also very nice IMO. these are definitly the shows strong points. what isn't however, is the characters.
The characters in this show are some of the cheesiest, boring, and cliche around. i mean, i can't even describe some oof the characters some of em are just awful! look, you have Ayato(overpowered main), Julis(the most bland tsundere on earth) Kirin( loli but i actually kinda like her charecter) and many other non notable ones. the ones who ARE interesting hardly get any screen time and its a bismal.
Overall do i think the show deserves all the hate? all the anger it has received?
NO ABSOLUTLEY NOT!
yes alot of the arguments are valid, and they all have a reason, but i feel like it was handled too much. the show has it's flaws and there are plenty, but it does have it's ups. the art is beautiful, the sound is superb, the story heck isnt bad in a weird way. if you are one who hates the story, you probably got confused from it. so what did you hate?
THE PLOT PROGRESSION
yes the story was mangled and screwed from how the story progressed if they had changed certain aspects or lines in the story...it may have not been that bad. the series has potential it truly does. if it was just slightly edited or saved certain parts for the story later, it would be easier to follow.
overall i liked the asterisk war. yes it was cliche ( very cliche) but it doesnt mean it is immidiatley the worst one in exsistance. of course it aint perfect or not for everyone. every anime is like that. there are others far worse than this show. (eromanga sensei, umaru chan, highschool dxd season 4, any hentai with a plot) i hated how this show was turned to a "harem" but i don't see a harem here. i see a promising anime with tons of potential that was not handled correctly and it paid for it and then received too much hate a show could handle. many of the issues in season 1 get fixed next season and i'll review that one too.
but in short the asterisk war is an underrated missused anime that suffered from A1's greed. the story progression was handled in the wrong way and made many confused, but the art and sound of the show with it's combined potential made something rather nice to watch if i was bored. and thats the anime it is for me. i only wish people would stop treating it like it's the absolute worst anime when there others IMO out there. it just needs to find it
