Ok, so this rec is kind of a stretch but I think still worth making. The main superficial similarity is that both are dark gory stories with lots of blood and brutality. On a deeper level however they are similar in that they both focus on relationships and telling the stories of long time rivals. Both also end on cliffhangers. While these two titles are similar, keep these key differences in mind: Both shows are hard to watch, but Shigurui is even harder to watch and understand, and it's less accessible to the common viewer than Berserk is. Also Shigurui is more historical, less supernatural, and requires greater concentration and patience.

Okay Okay, so I know this recommendation is a bit of a stretch, but I think these shows are similar enough because the main things that I enjoyed in Escaflowne are the SAME THINGS I liked about Valvrave and Gundam Seed. These are the types of shows that obviously aren't writing masterpieces and they weren't meant to be either, but they're still highly enjoyable. I won't say they are trash (I gave them high scores), but they have a trashy, soap opera like quality to them. It's kind of a mess, but at the same time you can't look away! As far as the things I liked/ similarites: -Both have op mecha that can turn into/do almost ANYTHING, love triangles, NTR, and war drama -Both are currently engaged in world wars and have ace fighters -With Valrave and Escaflowne, both have pilots that have a deeper (physical) connection with their mechas -LOTS OF DRAMA -THEY'RE ALL SUNRISE SHOWS. SUNRISE TRASH IS BEST TRASH The only main differences are that Escaflowne is fantasy/medieval setting while Valvrave and Seed are in outer space, and Escaflowne is more centered on a shoujo protagonist

Both have an epic adventure like feel to them. They include some magic and many mysteries and are constructed in fun alternate universes. Epic BROMANCE and strong sense of friendship in both series. The groups of friends (who first meet at the start of the series) have a strong sense of dedication and love for each other and later on begin to feel like family. Both have strong elements of legend and legendary heroes in the story and both are produced by A-1 so the animation and style are pretty similar. Even though both stories have tragedy in them, they are ultimately fun stories that will make you laugh and smile with joy

Both have previously civilian characters who are suddenly thrown into war. The plots are well written and deep with many mysteries to be revealed. Both titles gained a lot of attention (negative) for having shocking elements and plot developments. They are exciting, definitely very dramatic (some say over the top) and borderline parody. For this they have been called "train wrecks" and so bad it's good. However I like both of these shows very much and I see the aforementioned qualities as positive aspects that make the stories that much more interesting and engaging. Oh yeah, both are mecha
