[This review will cover all three seasons of Fruits Basket, and I'm guilty to admit but it will be biased].
Wow, what a ride. It has been a while since an anime has made this much of an impact on me. As an avid shoujo enjoyer, I can tell you right now that Fruits Basket is truly the best of its genre. TMS Entertainment, Yoshihide Ibata, and everyone that worked together to create this masterpiece have done an amazing job. Upon hearing that Fruits Basket will have another anime adaptation covering the whole manga back in 2019, I was ecstatic despite never watching the 2001 anime
...
or reading the manga.
From the start, we get to know the characters and the world that our main protagonist, Tohru, lives in. Though I mistook the anime as a reverse-harem, Fruits Basket is far from that. Throughout the three seasons, we get to dive deep into the main cast and supporting characters through their respective arcs. The author did an amazing job with fleshing all the characters out, and you know that they're talented at what they do when the supporting cast has fans of their own. The cast just feels like real people and not some one-dimensional background characters. Because of this, the characters feel relatable and allows the viewer to connect with them.
At first, Tohru's kindness and wisdom have caught me off-guard and led me into believing she was a Mary Sue. My dislike towards her character evolved into admiration as I got to know her more. Our precious protagonist can be seen as a role model to young girls everywhere through the actions she chose to make. Her role in the story made it all the more enjoyable, for it allows you to ponder on how you could also become kinder and understanding like Tohru.
In conclusion, I highly recommend Fruits Basket. There will be heart-wrenching moments, comedic scenes, and heartwarming clips. Fruits Basket not only leaves you with a scar on your heart but with lifelong lessons that will equip you for life.
