This is my first time making a review, so please bear with me. Actually, this movie is the main reason why I wanted to start reviewing animes and mangas and ultimately registering in this site. So let's do this the classic way, I'll elaborate my score per criteria.
Story - 10
I believe that this movie deserves the credit of 10 when it comes to the story. It was able to portray the situation of Japan during that time, but was still focused on the story of the protagonists(Seita and his sister). This movie was trying to portray the reality of how cruel are the consequences of
...
war. And it was able to do a good job of portraying it. What I really liked about the movie is that it portrayed the effect of war to those people who do not go directly on the battlefield. Meaning, the story is focused on the civilians not on the warriors/soldiers which is usually portrayed on movies and other animes. There are some animes that tries to portray these people(civilians) but Hotaru no Haka was the best one among all of them. Second thing that I liked regarding the story is that the movie was also able to portray that even during the times of war there is still the discrimination even among those who are left behind. And it was also able to portray the difference of the status of life of these people during war, when a person has money or properties and likewise. To make it short, what I really like about the story is that it was able to portray the hardships of people and cruelty of war realistically.
Art -10
Considering that this movie was made during the 80's, its art is very good. Even now its animation can still compete with the recent animes. And also, what was very good in the animation is that it goes with what is happening with the movie. The art is a little gloomy but is just right for the movie. The art also emphasizes on things that needs emphasis, like the wounds and the environment.
Sound - 9
There are some soundtracks which was used repeatedly. But this is not an because the soundtracks, just like the art, goes with what is happening in the movie. Regarding the voices, the voices of the dubbers fitted on the characters. Especially the voice of Setsuko,
Character - 10
What I really like about the characters is the continuous development of each persona. I saw how people change due to desperation, like what happened to Seita, his aunt, and the farmer where he exchanges goods to get food. I saw how people change due to not deprivation of food. I saw how people treat others when they are in pinch. I saw how people treat each other during war. Putting myself to their position, I think that that is also what I will do. But even though people are selfish and somewhat "evil", there are also people who developed in a good way. One thing that touched me regarding this movie, is that no matter what happened during the whole movie, Seita didn't abandon her sister and do everything he can for her to have a decent life.
Enjoyment - 10
Honestly, I was really not happy while watching this movie. I was even crying on some point. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed it because even though it was a really sad movie, there are still moments of happiness. I also enjoyed it because it has given me a realistic portrayal of the reality. It kept me watching even thought I don't really like sad movies/animes. But what I enjoyed the most is that this movie gave me a wake up call that there many people who are less fortunate than I am. And because of that, I should try to help those people and not turn a blind eye. It also made me think of how lucky I am that I have this life and did not experience those hardships. I will not want other people to experience that kind of hardships.
Overall - 10
This movie is really good and I think it's worth watching for there are many things that you will learn and realize during this movie.
