Both mangas focus on a first year setter/spiker duo. The similarity also extends to protagonists' inability to get along with one another: Haikyuu's Hinata and Kageyama being kicked out before they've started, and Junjou's Akira and Katta stubbornly competing not cooperating. However, they then quickly become a completed pair as a great asset. It's hard to not to think about the other when reading the volleyball centred mangas. Even the common goal to redeem a team previously of great power is similar. Junjou compacts insane volleyball into powerful matches whilst Haikyuu pushes the team into practices and overwhelming the opposition.

Both mangas centre around a cross-dressing female protagonist, who find themselves surrounded by males. The cross-dressing becomes the central plotline to both mangas issuing their own problems. A slight difference, however, is the level of romance: Hana-Kimi focuses more on the romantic feelings of Mizuki, whereas Ouran weighs towards Haruhi's friendships and development into romance. Each manga left me laughing for the absurd yet relatable situations the characters find themselves in. Both mangas have their own distinctive set of characters which makes it hard not to fall in love with. Though they both give the comedic punch, they each are able to tackle with the more serious problems that arise. Lovers of shoujo manga will no doubt fall for one if they have read the other.
