The tonal shift into tragedy and a real race against time is so unexpected that the payoff is SO worth it. Not to mention, I really couldn’t see where the ending was going and was genuinely stressed and exhausted alongside Okabe in not knowing if things were going to turn out fine. What a rarity in a show!

The rest of the cast is also so so wonderful (I promise, give it time). Came into it really hating each character and now leaving it they’ve become so dear to me 😢

Loved the blend of low-brow comedy and High Art. Art style was such a feast to see - so experimental, beautiful fights scenes, so bloody, and such unique art style - tongue -in-cheek and gruesome and beautiful!!! Animators really had fun with it.

On the plot front, the emphasis on turning failures into strengths or being strategic with your strengths is such an exciting concept for shonen. And so much mentorship!!!! My heart is so warm but also the brain is buzzing - I wanna channel Fubuki lol.

Also great insight on samurai pride of that era and the birth of subversive technique and ninjas. Not ...

Character design is so cool and the writing feels very contemporary - not only in terms of genre-bending (which I felt like was an interesting twist on typical Sherlock-adjacent shows), but also re the characters' dialogue. Aya and Tsugaru speak to each other in such an interesting blend of respect, friendship, apprenticeship, and disdain. Tsugaru's rakugo just thrown in was also such a joy to listen to.

Animation was also surprisingly well done - the fight scene in the last episode was done so beautifully and was artistically beyond anime's confines, which is rare for the genre. Soundtrack is a bop as well.
