jujutsu kaisen. what a shounen. despite having occasional issues in terms of character motivations, comedy that misses and plot inconsistencies, its arguably the perfect shounen. everything that people look out for in a shounen, jujutsu kaisen does and goddamn does it do it well.
action scenes look nothing short of spectacular. dynamic, colorful and oh so exciting, every fight scene has weight and never shortchanges the viewer in terms of showcasing just how crazy fights in the world of JJK are like.
the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. fitting the mood at all times and constantly elevating whats shown on screen, the music used never fails bring
...
the viewer further into the universe of jujutsu kaisen. be it an emotional piano for a touching scene, or an absolute banger of an electro/rock/hip-hop track for the show's iconic fights, the soundtrack essentially doesn't fail.
and now the characters. each and every character presents the viewer with some something cool and unique, main characters to side characters to villains alike. all characters get development that doesn't feel forced or stereotypical and instead relatable and organic. not to mention, their powers are pretty fucking badass.
all in all, jujutsu kaisen is fantastic. sure, it may not be the best anime of all time and it doesn't propose the deepest philosophical questions or the most clever plot points, but at the end of the day, its a shounen. a show is not considered "good" when it absolutely excels in every possible metric you can judge it by. instead, a show is considered "good" when it achieves the exact intended outcome it set out to achieve, exactly the way they wanted it to achieve. i believe the writers of jujutsu kaisen wanted to create something action-packed, beautiful and above all, endlessly entertaining. they have most definitely achieved that.

never given a 10/10 review for an anime but, here goes:
pros:
+ a unique, comprehensive and well-developed story. there are allusions and inspirations drawn from other famous works such as Naruto, but HxH takes the basic premises of those concepts and completely turns it into its own. with excellent, interconnecting narratives that never seem to be irrelevant or unnecessary, an extraordinary roller coaster of story plays out beautifully for the viewers and subverts expectations to constantly keep the viewer guessing and always entertained
+ varied, distinctive and 3-dimensional characters. with a clear and heavy focus on the main characters, HxH still manages to dedicate sufficient yet not
...
too much time to develop and explore other characters and how they relate to the main characters. characters are mostly very well-drawn and very likable for the most part, be it the heroes of our story or many of the villains. HxH never fails to help the viewers form a tight emotional bond with many of the characters in the series, even some of the most cruel villains by showing different facets and exploring different layers to their personality
+ exceptional pacing. with little filler content and the fillers being turned into useful recap, HxH constantly delivers on the action consistently and never feels too slow or too quick for 95% of the series, focusing on what's needed and giving events varied emphasis based on their importance to the story. keeps the viewer extremely engaged and not overloading the viewer with information despite the many unique concepts presented
+ generally good art and animation. fight scenes are smooth and well-animated, although the art is nothing extremely special or revolutionary (as expected, this is a 2011 anime) however character designs are very pleasing and also iconic
+ amazing and fitting soundtrack. memorable themes for the main characters, a highly varied soundtrack crossing numerous genres effortlessly and never fails to capture the exact mood of the scene being presented. always adds an additional layer of tension and atmosphere to the events unfolding on the screen. also, the openings and endings are just hella good.
cons:
- im very very honestly trying hard to think of a solid con, but this is honestly a nitpick. a very small handful of scenes and decisions made by characters can be questionable at times, although this rarely happens and is normally explained on screen.
without a doubt, definitely within the top 3 anime i've ever watched in my life, if not the very best one. so so so easy to recommend to anyone who likes anime who even someone who has just started. may HxH live on, eternally.

+ excellent music design. soundtracks are detailed, engaging, immersive and emotional, not to mention varied and fitting of the scene they are in. opening is lit as hell as well
+ pacing of the show is excellent, never feels just too fast or too slow at any point in time. enough time is utilized in building the mood or emotion of the scene yet scenes flow without ever feeling too draggy.
+ characters are relatable and mostly focused with decent depth
+ plot progression and dialogue are solid, complex yet easy and clear enough to follow. the story never feels unfocused or confusing despite the amount
...
of world building present.
+ animation and art are colorful, striking and vibrant with sophisticated detail. overall very smooth as well and bring out the vibe of the current atmosphere out clearly.
+ certain events are straight up jaw dropping and feel extremely poignant and impactful, such as some of the plot twists. they can feel sudden or unexpected, but this plays out well because the viewers realise the significance of such events and how they tie in to the larger, darker message at hand as well.
+ very little and close to zero third person narration, important information is either literally shown or imbued into character dialogue. much more engaging and effective in this way instead of monotonous third person narration.
+ the plot while focused is very exciting and subject to twists and turns, keeping the viewers on their toes and wanting to know whats next since there are few cliches.
+ although occasionally the logic of the world is slightly questionable, the story proves to be extremely well written and poignant towards the later episodes. the perspective of the story is completely turned upside down to make for an absolutely poetic moment and a total twist of what the introductory scenes/episodes were supposed to have meant, forcing the viewer to reflect and ponder the implications and truth behind all the events that have unfolded. amazing, unique and immensely impactful storytelling.
+ an anime that ultimately leaves you with one clear and haunting message: some things are just too good to be true. there is always more beneath the surface of the story.
at the end of the day, the strong storytelling, poignant plot, emotionally striking sound design and unique art just makes madoka magica an absolutely stunning anime, potentially one of the best and most underrated of all time.

strong points
+ best thing about naruto has got to be the characters. naruto, itachi, jiraiya, these are just some of the few examples of profoundly impactful characters that have etched a deep impression onto its viewers and caused viewers to be extremely emotionally attached to them and whatever they may experience throughout the story
+ although not particularly sophisticated and intellectual to the likes of Death Note and Code Geass, naruto's story and universe in general are still very comprehensive and feel very immersive for the viewer
+ the use of music is very focused and adds heavily onto the atmosphere as and when appropriate, changing the
...
mood and tone as it goes along.
+ many of the fight scenes that happen are very well thought out where characters do interesting things to try to outsmart their opponents or work together effectively to form a better strategy, generally applies for most fights
weak points
- of course the major criticism naruto gets is the insane amount of filler material/flashbacks present (almost 40% of the 500 episodes) and while this definitely prevents naruto from being a straight 9/10 due to the repetitiveness and loss of impact from overusing fillers, there is a filler guide available people use it as necessary
- naturally, naruto's art and animations are not particularly the best. some character's faces and fight scenes in general are poorly animated (e.g. naruto vs pain) although generally they are good enough to go buy most of the time. don't expect anything close to violet evergarden or anything like that
- naruto's pacing can be questionable at times, although this applies more exclusively for earlier seasons. from less important events being explored heavily to extremely draggy fight scenes, these are some of the issues with pacing. once again however, not a very big issue for the most part of naruto especially if you follow the filler guide
at the end of the day, naruto is still one of the best big-ticket mainstream animes out there with a really comprehensive universe and some of the most impactful characters out there.

strong points
+ the opening song is just dope as hell (the ending song is really good too)
+ the art and animation are very enjoyable. good use of colours and contrast, appropriate lighting and fluid scenes. expected from a studio such as Madhouse. not the best i have seen but still competent.
+ Momonga's character is very well fleshed out and developed. From his analytical mindset during battle to his tactical skills when making plans, the viewers is shown how he actively makes decisions (even if he can be very op at times) to achieve his goals. by the end, you can also see that he
...
genuinely cares for the welfare of the guardians that serve under him, even though he knows he can forfeit them anytime.
+ supporting characters have contrasting personality traits as well, keeping the environment around Momonga dynamic and memorable. although some of the character may not be very sophisticated and end up being one dimensional, they still keep the atmosphere vibrant and exciting
+ most of the events and interactions are very reasonable and do not come across as inconsistent, hence the presence of very few plot loopholes and plot armor as well considering momonga is very powerful from the get go. the show does a good job on instead focusing more on momonga's character since we already know he is very proficient in fighting
+ leading on from this, the premise of the show is unique and not cliche, putting the viewers in the shoes of a protagonist that is less emotional and very very powerful, essentially like a villain that is protagonist instead of antagonist. this makes for a refreshing take on the MMORPG/game-based genre of anime
weaknesses
- the story can feel slightly disjointed at times, partially because of the mystery surrounding the plot's premise as well as sometimes the viewer is not shown clearly as to why the plot is progressing in a certain way, hence leaving the reader questioning the relevance and importance of certain events
- events can sometimes jump from one to the next without proper signposting and links, which may leave the viewer slightly confused. they may understanding what is happening at the very moment it is happening but be totally unsure about the context
- the overall plot is not very complex, would be more engaging if there were more elements for the viewer to consider/evaluate/think. at most there are the fight scenes where u you see both sides duelling it out but even then the fights can be rather predictable considering momonga's power
- not alot of emotional attachment to the characters hence viewers might not be as engaged/immersed in the show as could have been possible, although this might just be due to the nature of their personalities eg. momonga being a naturally more logical/thinking based character
- the soundtrack/music other than opening and ending are mediocre and not memorable
- they could have animated momonga's skeleton face instead of never changing his expression
- the pacing of the show is sometimes affected by the disjointed/poorly linked parts of the story resulting in uneven focus and not allowing the viewer to absorb important plot details while sometimes focusing on draggy points
however, at the end of the day, i never found the show to be overly draggy at any point, it was a good mix of adventure and action instead purely focusing on either one. was well entertained, although it appears the people who read the manga feel generally disappointed. (which does not apply to me)

Based on the many reviews posted here, it seems that there is a general consensus that this anime is a masterpiece and was revolutionary and very forward-thinking for the time period in which it was released. On that note, I would have to largely agree. Although, just because an anime is different and stands out from the rest, does not mean it doesn't have its flaws. (also this is the first review i have ever written on MAL haha please don't be too hard on me)
I will start off with the strengths of the anime.
+ The main selling point and key strength of the anime
...
is the way it navigates and explores the theme of the human identity and connection. What it means to be human and whether the reality we perceive to be as simple it is. What it means to be "connected" to others be it online or in real life and how truly thin is the line that divides the real world and the online world
+ Although it may not appeal to all, the music and art style suit the direction of the anime very well. Minimalist sounds that reach out to you and an abstract, heavily technologically influenced artstyle adds an immersive experience for the viewer and does well in helping to push forth the key themes and makes the reader question the content being shown
+ Lastly, the unorthodox and unique way of storytelling really captures the readers attention and prevents SEL from ever feeling cliched or bland in any way, something many anime suffer from
However, there are problems that result in this anime not deserving a perfect 10 in my opinion.
- As mentioned, the bizarre storytelling is one of the unique points of the anime. However, there are problems with it. Due to the extremely sporadic and seemingly random nature of the storytelling, plot points can come across as very confusing and requires the reader the string alot of the events together which can expose certain plot holes or nonsensical portions. Although the style of storytelling suits the direction of the anime, it isn't really wielded extremely masterfully or consistently.
- Most of the characters feel very bland except for Lain herself who shows much more internal conflict and dialogue as well as the ability to question her own thoughts and judgment, then making key decisions from there. The rest of the characters are simply there to move the story along or act as random points in which philosophical thoughts are narrated to the reader.
- In addition, although the thought-provoking nature of this anime is a strong point, the anime fails to truly reel the viewer in emotionally. We have barely any emotional attachment to any of the characters and are simply waiting for the story to continue unfolding, with the exception of Lain herself who has more character development. An anime that only depends on its story and fails to have at least a few compelling characters would not come across as strong.
Hence, my final rating for SEL would be 8/10, although if it was more polished and had a slightly clearer direction, it has more potential to be a perfect 10. Would definitely recommend this anime to any technology nerds or people who are interested in psychological material/ philosophy. Not to anyone else though.
