what made this manga a star for me was, aside from its subversiveness, its take on human morality. where i think Naoki uses it at best is first with one of the protagonists, Kenji, who was both consistently courageous and cowardly, a "good-for-nothing" son turned to a man wanting to settle things right for his loved ones. next is my favorite character, Sadakiyo, who had been on the receiving end of ugly things but still bloomed into a protector of abandoned children. not to mention, he vowed that as a teacher, he'd remember every single one of his students... i liked this character's redemption because ...
