what made this manga a star for me was, aside from its subversiveness, its take on human morality. where i think Naoki uses it at best is first with one of the protagonists, Kenji, who was both consistently courageous and cowardly, a "good-for-nothing" son turned to a man wanting to settle things right for his loved ones. next is my favorite character, Sadakiyo, who had been on the receiving end of ugly things but still bloomed into a protector of abandoned children. not to mention, he vowed that as a teacher, he'd remember every single one of his students... i liked this character's redemption because ... the kindness wasn't just a baseless one. not something 'natural within him' or something - it was a choice. he was also once an enabler of whatever bs "friend" did, but the source of his kindness was also the reason why he became a subject of manipulation in the first place: his longing for a friend.

i was reading his arc at 3 am and would've sobbed if it weren't for my cousin waking up lol. i wished he stayed alive so all those masked children had someone to rely on :')
