No Game No Life

The Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise is today strongly associated with the eponymous card game, but early in the manga it contained a dazzling variety of high-stakes, often life-or-death games, and the first anime adapts this portion of the series. If one is drawn to NGNL for the concept of betting everything on a game - any game - one will find it echoed here. In a way, however, the two stories are flipped around; Sora eschews magic, battles against magical cheats, and struggles against magical foes, while the spirit of the Millennium Puzzle (although certainly hating when his opponent cheats) is more than willing to cheat with magic or use it to punish even a non-magical loser.

It's not just the hotblooded manly screaming and other super robot tropes which tie these shows together, although if one put Kamina in a digimon show he'd pretty much be Masaru Daimon; both seem determined to break the laws of physics and go beyond the impossible. But it's not hard to see the beastmen and themes of ethnic conflict in Mercurimon, Gotsumon and the other early digimon antagonists, or Kamina City in Eldoradimon, although the Antispirals bear more resemblance to Apocalymon than anything in this digimon series.

Code Geass: Hangyaku no Lelouch R2

There is only one anime I've ever seen which comes close to Code Geass R2 for the "ridiculous trainwreck" factor, and that's Kannazuki no Miko. If you want something so silly you have to laugh your ass off and love it anyway, this is the anime for you.
