In this anime everything is well thought and has a serious background, starting from it's name: Fate/Apocrypha. Apocrypha means a non-canonical work in a set of well established series, with regards to the Bible this means heresy. And this is what exactly Fate/Apocrypha is compared to the original Fate/Stay Night series: it is a heresy. That's why many Fate fans dislike it — most things are non-canonical here: rules of the Holy Grail War, involved parties and even place where events are unfolding.
As every part of the Fate series Apocrypha contains epic battles between heroes from different eras. But it has more than that to
...
it, it is so much more than just battles. There are no truly good ore truly evil characters here: holy heroes commit terrible crimes and dark ones make great deeds. By the end of the day everything is about desires and the ways they are accomplished.
The plot has very loose and circumstantial connection to the original Fate series and may be seen as events unfolding in a parallel universe, though there are some hints that it may be a prequel to Fate/Zero series. It will be up to you to find them. Time is looped in these series and full understanding of some elements come only after second watching.
So if you prefer original Fate setting, stay away from this anime! But if your mind is open, if you are ready for unexpected, Fate/Apocrypha is for you. By the way it impacts watcher, by the level of emotions in arises it is one of the best in the Fate universe, I can compare it only to the original Stay Night work.
And last but not the least: the series features absolutely amazing music theme which involves deeply in the plot.
