I reckon 'Your Name' had a good strong premise with the body-swapping scenario to critically evaluate what it means to 'walk in another's footsteps'. Unfortunately the film quickly diverts from that to focus on a time-travelling scenario, which isn't where its strength is in my opinion. A show that better deals with deconstructing the perspectives of others is Kokoro Connect, using not just body swapping but other methods that betray an individual's projected persona.

Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu

Delivers where Sword Art Online does not; Re:Zero is a personal journey dealing with death anxiety, so much so that the protagonist sometimes descends into madness. It more accurately captures a 'RPG' dynamic, with respawning actually being a thing, which actually makes the series even more devastating. Also features a more reasonable 'levelling-up' of the main character meaning there is a genuine struggle.

Both are stories of friendship between people from very different worlds, where one world endangers the existence of the other. Beautiful visuals with stunning soundtracks make these films very watchable.

Both set in a fantasy world. Both have similar fan service elements. However, Log Horizon doesn't find it necessary to include a permanent death scenario as a plot device, and is better for it.

Sword Art Online promised a personal journey dealing with death anxiety and acceptance of death in a strange world. After the first few episodes, it was clear this wasn't going to be delivered and fan service ensued. I recommend KonoSuba instead. Its more fun without the pretense.

These Miyazaki works rank as possibly the greatest anime film productions in history. Themes of environment and social responsibility are strong in both these films, but Nausicaa is a more personal journey with a more inventive mythology.

The ethical theory of utilitarianism is dealt with very differently in both these shows, which is incredible given that both shows involved Gen Urobuchi. Madoka is a strong proponent for utilitarianism whereas Fate/Zero deconstructs it. Both have incredible soundtracks.

Death parade offers its characters the chance to assess their worldly lives whereas Angel Beats! leaves its characters to figure this out on their own in a state of limbo. Both shows are heavy on themes of death, more specifically making peace with the idea.

Pretty obvious comparison, but I make the recommendation anyway. Both anime are driven by anti-heroes who seek to impose their own brand of justice through supernatural means. Both play out like an intricate chess game between the vigilante and the established order.

The only similarity is the mecha. I'd mostly recommend this if you want a complete tonal shift. In many ways, this anime is the anti-Evangelion, foregoing the introspection and despair of humanity's collective fate that Eva presents for a spectacle of the highest order. Gurren Lagann is both mindless and thought-provoking, with a core message that power comes from within, championing the indomitable spirit of the spiral races xD.
