I watched the first seven episodes awhile ago, and then the pandemic hit, and I got side tracked. I decided to watch it again from the beginning. I just finished watching the fifth episode and decided I needed to change my original score from 8 to 9.
This anime is so beautifully done. The setting is not one that lends itself to feeling hopeful and inspired, but it does just that.
The girls can really only imagine what was lost. The watcher, even though we aren’t of that particular world, knows more about their world than they do. We’re familiar with the remnants that are
...
left empty and scattered about throughout their journey.
The sadness that the setting evokes would almost be too much to bear, especially given what’s been happening worldwide these past few years, and now with Russia invading the Ukraine. It’s like looking into the future, and not necessarily one that’s far away.
The girls’ curiosity, their attempts to grasp what happened, and finding delight in discovering the unknown, is what is inspiring. Making it about hope. Giving me hope, along with gratitude.
The music is also a large part of feeling this inspiration and hope. The sounds that are amplified and highlighted fit perfectly and are just as significant and important to the “feel” of this anime as is the art.
If you’ve watched it before and didn’t think much of it, I invite you to view it again. Sometimes a little time and distance changes our outlook and we view things differently, which can give us a fresh perspective.
I’m updating the review since seeing the last episode. It was overall a great series but the last episode is not satisfying. It leaves you feeling lost and extremely sad for the girls. It brings out many emotions that stay with you for awhile afterwards.

I watched the first episode some time ago and I was not impressed. It shows its age with the dated music, clothing, gender stereotypes, etc. The story didn't seem to have a lot of substance.
I started watching it again, picking up from where I left off, and once you get past the dated aspects of it, the story is pretty complicated and our heroines find themselves in some dark, and sinister situations.
I'm on episode 13 at the time of this review. I'll update it again at episode 25.
Right now though, I'm giving it an 8. The characters are consistent in their attitudes
...
and actions, and I've come to like them all. I'm very interested in finding out what's going on behind their father's disappearance and what's to become of Hitomi and Toshio's relationship.

After completing the second season I’ve decided that I like it even more than the first season.
I liked that the characters from the first season show growth and development in their second season.
The last few episodes put me through the emotional ringer, but it made for an incredibly satisfying ending with just a few unanswered questions left over to keep me hoping there will be more.
I’m not a professional critic and I don’t pretend to be. I know whether or not I like something.
If I’m cheering for the heroes, applauding when villains get their comeuppance, laughing along with the characters, and
...
feeling moved by important moments in their lives, then it’s a great anime.

Psychic Detective Yakumo
13 episodes of unexpected (mostly) twists and turns down a dark alley of paranormal mystery. The storytellers pack quite a lot into those 13 episodes. The focus begins on the two main characters and deftly brings in other characters, expanding the viewers knowledge of their friends and family, while at the same time giving us a broader, more insightful, look into Yakumo and Haruka.
The usual tropes are there, but there are reasons these tropes are used over and over again. When done right, they make for good story telling.
Yakumo is the tragic, good looking hero who just needs the love
...
of a good heroine to put him on the path of righteousness and, of course, happiness.
Haruka is the naive, heedless of her own beauty and charm, heart of gold, but courageous of spirit, young woman, who finds herself drawn into our hero’s world. Both hero and heroine are forever changed.
Good overcomes evil, love overcomes hate, but what happens in between, and is told in the 13 episodes, is definitely worth watching.
The story has a great buildup of seemingly unrelated cases that begin to intertwine and mesh into each other in unexpected and delightfully twisted ways. There are places where one does guess accurately what will happen but then the show will surprise you when you least expect it. Don’t be surprised if a gasp or two escapes you while watching.
There are a few areas that I did find lacking, but certainly not enough to detract from the enjoyment I took in watching the series. I’m not certain if the intention was to do more than one season or not and they may have been planning to fill in or fix those areas at a later date.
The villain, while suitably evil, was not a satisfying villain. They were more of a caricature of evil than something or someone to truly fear. The story, in my opinion, would have been better served if we had learned more about the motives and history of the villain—something to flesh them out, so to speak.
The last episode was done well in that, if it was the last episode it would be fairly wrapped up with a few loose ends so that if a second season were coming they could build on it.
Overall, I loved this series. If you like mystery, romance and a good story, you need to check this out.
