I REALLY HATE MAKOTO
"School Days" is an anime series that left me with a profound sense of disappointment and frustration. From start to finish, it presented a story that not only failed to captivate me but left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. The central character, Makoto Itou, exemplifies everything that is detestable about a male protagonist.
Makoto Itou, in my view, is an insufferable character devoid of any redeeming qualities. He is selfish, manipulative, and lacks any moral compass whatsoever. Throughout the series, he shamelessly toys with the emotions of the female characters, particularly Kotonoha Katsura and Sekai Saionji. His actions reflect a
...
complete disregard for their feelings and well-being, as he callously jumps from one girl to another without any regard for the consequences.
What further exacerbates my disdain for Makoto is his lack of accountability. Instead of facing the repercussions of his actions, he continues to make reckless decisions, leaving a trail of heartbroken individuals in his wake. His inability to take responsibility for the pain he causes only serves to amplify his repulsive nature.
The only good thing about this show is the ending. When Saiko kills Makoto I felt an imense happiness that I rarely fell watching something I dont like, but then, when I heard the reason she killed is not because he is an insuferable piece of trash that deserves everything bad ind this world, but because he was going to stay with Kotonoha, my happiness felt to the ground and my hate for the show grew even stronger
Moreover, the narrative itself fails to offer any meaningful insight or social commentary. It simply indulges in shock value and sensationalism. The series attempts to portray a realistic and gritty portrayal of high school romance, but instead, it wallows in gratuitous scenes of infidelity, manipulation, and even violence. This excessive focus on melodrama detracts from any potential depth or substance that could have been explored.
Furthermore, the pacing of the story feels disjointed and uneven. It struggles to maintain a cohesive narrative flow, often meandering without purpose. The plot twists and turns, supposedly aiming for unpredictability, but they come across as forced and contrived. Instead of provoking genuine intrigue, they simply serve to frustrate and annoy the viewer.
In terms of character development, "School Days" falls short. Aside from Makoto, the other characters are left underdeveloped and one-dimensional. Their motivations and actions often lack coherence, making it difficult to empathize with them or invest in their stories. It's disheartening to witness potentially interesting characters reduced to mere pawns in Makoto's self-centered game.
Ultimately, "School Days" is an anime series that fails to deliver on its promise. It presents a morally bankrupt protagonist and a narrative that revels in shock value rather than meaningful storytelling. It left me feeling disenchanted and questioning the purpose behind its creation. If you're seeking a thought-provoking and engaging anime, I would strongly advise looking elsewhere.
