To surmise, even if you enjoy isekai I would recommend avoiding Isekai Cheat Magician. I'm a casual viewer that enjoys isekai so while I understand that there is a generic model, most of the isekai I have watched up till now have tried to add in their own twist or originality. Some are a guilt pleasure, some are a slice of life, and some might feel like they're referencing other shows directly but still have their own characters, plot and uniqueness. Cheat Magician seems to go out of its way to fail on every aspect.
To start, the character design feels outdated, the animation is lacking,
...
and worse, the story itself is so predictable and boring that there is nothing left but a cheap, off-brand imitation of isekai. Think trying to buy Coca-Cola and getting water with some brown food coloring instead.
I watched up to episode 5 to give this a chance. What I found:
1) If you've watched isekai before, you can literally skip the first episode and miss nothing.
2) The protagonist is supposedly OP, still receives the typical "do you want power" trope, and barely shows any of said OP power or development by ep 5.
3) The fights lack any kind of logic. To illustrate from outside the subject matter, it's as if one side is fighting as a pokemon trainer and the other side as a mage. As the mage, ignoring the pokemon and focusing on defeating the trainer that is just standing around doing nothing is such an obvious choice that it's impossible to ignore.
4) The background music and animation do nothing to add or support.
5) There is nothing leading the story to continue watching. I have not read the LN so I cannot speak to the source material, but I found the pacing to be incredibly poor.
The story sins are so great that you can't try to mindlessly watch it to pass time as all its grievances stick out too much to ignore. Don't waste your time watching this dumpster fire of an isekai.
