I was pleasently surprised and disappointed by this series. It's kind of like a "Pop Team Epic" for horror. The characters seem to look and act like how they do in the game (even though Takuro is protrayed nicer than in the game) and are pretty spot on. Story-wise the shorts aren't always the best in quality. While some are genuinely funny, some are really bland and unfunny. The ending was surprisingly scary, and really came out of left field. It was a welcome surprise. The animation was well-done and super cute. It's not the best short "comedy" one-shot series out there, and I ... wouldn't recommend it to anyone who hasn't played the game, but it's a decent show.

I've heard about this from a couple of friends. Hearing it was an out-of-print hard to find extreme ero guro novel, I took it upon myself to find and read it. In trying to purchase it, I found that I did not have $1,000 dollars to spare. After a bit of snooping around the internet I found a copy to read on archive. Now, I regret that decision. This is nothing more than nine short "stories" made for the purpose of seeing how much gore and obscure fetishes you can fit into one. I say "stories" in quotation marks because they really have no plot. ... They're just guro art all compiled into one big mess. The only story with a semblance of a plot is the very last one. It's actually a pretty intriguing story, and if every other story in Ultra Gash Inferno was like this, I wouldn't mind it as much. But no, it's the only one. The one thing going for this manga is the artwork itself. It's very detailed, not one disgusting detail forgotten. The backgrounds are well drawn, and has intent. But that;'s the only "good' part of this manga. Personally, I won't be reading or recommending this to anyone anytime soon. There's better guro out there to read.

In terms of shoujo anime, this isn't anything special. It's not a bad show; it was a fun watch and I gushed every time Usui came on screen, but it didn't really do anything genre breaking. You have your dere (in this case tsundere) protagonist Misaki, prime love interest Usui (who is the best part of this series) (like seriously he's just everything), rival love interest and childhood friend Shintani, and random undeveloped friend characters who only get one personality trait. The main theme will get stuck in your head though, and the music is pleasing (though I won't be re listening to it anytime ... soon). The best part of this series has to be the art style (i.e. Usui). Everything is just so pretty; the characters, the food, the outfits, the background. I doubt that this will get another season, so I'll probably get around to reading the manga at some point. Wouldn't be my first choice of a romance or shoujo recommendation, but definitely would recommend to watch at some point for Usui and a good time.

I found out about this manga after watching the 2001 Takashi Miike live action adaptation. I started out with some pretty high expectations due to the movie. Let me tell you, this exceeded all of them. Each character is methodically thought out, and even the minor characters get fleshed-out backstories and character arcs. From the mentally unstable killer Ichi, to the masochistic Anjo leader Kakihara, the mysterious manipulator Jiji, the traitorous hustler Karen, even the minor characters like the twins and Kakihara's bodyguard Kaneko get to have character, and are not just there to advance the plot or be fillers. The story is immaculate. Not ... only is it a well-crafted cat and mouse chase between the "ultimate" sadist and masochist, it also manages to have a decent yakuza war subplot. Both of those are interesting, and could stand on their own if they were two separate stories. The art is kind of jarring at times, and it's personally kind of ugly, but it works for the most part. The gore and torture scenes obviously had lots of time put into them, making them the standout of this series. It's definitely messed up, and i would say it unnecessarily goes too far at times, but when it's good it's good. If you're a fan of messed up, gory, or yakuza-centered manga, I'd highly recommend this to you.

Personally, I love the Corpse Party series. I've played all the games and watched Tortured Souls. I know the series has its fault, but I'll defend almost everything it has to offer. Notice how I said almost everything. I won't defend Corpse Party: Missing Footage though, because this OVA is a hot piece of garbage that's an unnecessary edition to the franchise. Starting with story, it really has no importance to the overall plot of Corpse Party. 50% of it is simply just fan service, while the other 50% consists of some "slice of life esque" scenes set the day before the events of Tortured ... Souls that have poor format and are overall just uninteresting to watch. The only semi-story important part is the first scene of the OVA, which is all ready covered in the original animation. So story-wise, there isn't much. The art is the same as the main anime's, making it the only half-decent thing to come out of this. Nothing mind-blowing or extremely gory like the main anime, so it doesn't really strike me as anything extraordinary or notable. Sound was almost non-existent, but it's mostly basic slice of life background music and children screaming. It's overall forgettable and you'll forget it in about almost as soon as it's over like me. As for the voice-acting, it again is not bad, it's just not anything outstanding. In Tortured Souls, the characters are already pretty underdeveloped, with only a few getting discernible personality traits. This however, this just doesn't give any character at all. It actually takes away from characters like Naomi and Ayumi who actually were given character in the main anime. Every single character except for Sachiko is there for the soul purpose of either fan service or some unnecessary add-on, which is just painful to watch. There is no enjoyment in this OVA. None. At all. It is boring to watch on its own, and it is boring to watch as an addition to Tortured Souls. It's just boring. No one who I've talked to about this has found it anything but boring. I'll say it one last time, this OVA is BORING. Some OVA's are genuinely intriguing, or they will add something really interesting to their series. This does none of that. It is 11 minutes of untasteful fan-service and boring side stories that as a whole product is boring and unneeded. This rightfully deserves a 1/10 with the recommendation to never watch.
