You thought it was some cute girls doing cute things, but you were wrong. Gakkou Gurashi! fools you until the end of episode 1 while Madoka Magica, it's episode 3. Also, Madoka Magica is darker than Gakkou Gurashi!. The similarities (may contain spoilers): - Looks cute, but it's not. - Young girls trapped in a dark situation, and nobody knows about them. - The main character is a cute pink-haired girl who seems useless, but actually solves some big problems. - Heavy psychological atmosphere. - Plenty of drama, sad moments.

[Spoiler alert] Madoka seems kiddy, but it's actually dark. It's not your average lucky go lucky magical girl anime type. From a description I read on YouTube, we can say it's like a candy shop built on the Native American burial ground. These two share so much similarities, though they don't look like it: - Madoka Magica seems light-hearted, funny, just like your typical cute magical girl anime at the beginning... but it's not. Don't be fool by the look. - The main characters learn that they have some sort of special power, but eventually they learn about the serious consequences to using it. - This show turns darker and deeper through the series, with psychological implications. Both are brilliant shows. S;G focuses more on science, theories and time traveling while Madoka seems more about emotions, hope and despair (sometimes Christianity related). Madoka seems more depressing than S;G, that ending though.
