*WARNING: This review contains spoilers. Read at your own risk - but I'll be honest, it's not like you should be watching this one anyway*
If MAL had a 0/10, this would get a 0/10.
Not high on words for this one, but extremely high on disappointment. I couldn't explain why I watched this nonsense through till the end. Perhaps it was hope, perhaps it was pure obstinacy, but I was let down thoroughly. Every year, mayhaps every season, there is without doubt at least one crappy isekai that is a disappointment to the genre and one of the reasons everybody hates isekai. Me personally, I love
...
isekai, so seeing anime like this makes me furious. Let's go over what exactly makes this anime such a disaster, shall we?
Hachi-nan tte Sore wa Nai Deshou is a story about Wendelin von Benno Baumeister, a child born into a family of lower-class nobility. However, he is actually a reincarnation of a 25-year-old salaryman. This is a world where magic is extremely rare, but surprise surprise, Wendelin aka Well has prodigious magical abilities surpassing
CHARACTERS: 0/10
A laughably written MC. He's such a stereotypical isekai MC that it's almost amusing. This is a grown man in the workforce reborn in another world, a 30+ year old in the body of a 6 year old, and yet he behaves like he's just been born? Fast forward to when he's 15 and it's like he's just been regressing. The only thing he's actually used his knowledge of his past life for is to create soy sauce. And why would he go out of his way? He's one of the few people who can use magic, more powerful than any of the other magicians, so he's automatically at the apex of this world. He doesn't need to work for anything. Don't get me wrong. I don't usually hate on power fantasies. But a power fantasy with a shitshow of an MC who seems more lost than a child? Why, just why? It isn't possible for someone to be this hopeless of a human being. They try portraying him as someone who is a shrewd nobleman at times with things that he does, but every second of screentime that he has does exactly the opposite.
And the heroines. Wordless. Speechless. They're as tasteless as stale bread. The two female MCs we're first introduced to are obsessed with the MC just because they want status and the easy way through life (well, that's the only reason everyone's obsessed with him). Meanwhile the one female character who doesn't seem to be trying to use him is simply so bland and stereotypical as the 'seemingly perfect character with insecurities' that it makes me want to hurl. And the final female character that they introduce is so random, so hopelessly introduced, it's like, why in heavens were they even trying to do this? It's not even like they develop the characters properly - if they did, then perhaps there may have been something to redeem. But nope. No saving them.
PLOT: ???
What plot? Where plot? There's literally no plot. This is a story about the MC and his companions simply breezing through life riding the coattails of Wendelin's ridiculous isekai magic powers while making the occasional salaryman reference joke.
MUSIC: 3/10
Eh.
ART: 3/10
Eh.
If the Ehs weren't obvious, this was a thoroughly horrific anime. I've seen nearly every relatively recent crappy isekai and action fantasy there is, and this really takes the cake. Considering that there are anime like Isekai Smartphone and Kenja no Mago which are infamous for being absolutely crappy isekai, the fact that something like this could possibly exist is honestly amazing. How is it possible for an author to ignore their own premise and forget even simple details like this? I'll never understand. The lesson here is that you have absolutely nothing to gain and everything to lose by watching this. Don't make the same mistake that I did by wasting a good four hours of your time on this when you could be watching something a million times better. Or, well, really, a million times zero is still a million, so it's hard to say. Point is, y'all, stay away from this. As far away as possible from this.
