Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer is a manga I had a lot of difficulty convincing someone to read. The story start slow, begin with 2 emo teenager, the name made no sense, and the art style is nothing to write home about. I often just ended up telling them "just trust me and read the damn thing".

My problem with the "slice of life" genre is that it is very hard to relate to the character in those shows. Just like how Fist of North Star have over-the-top violent, "slice of life" tend to suffer from over-the-top peace and happiness.
Hachimitsu to Clover have none of those problem. The characters in the show faced a lot of realistic problem. Young people have endless opportunity in front of them, but at the same time it bring the same amount of doubt and anxiety. Finally, an anime about MMO game done right, not only the show managed to put a lot of detail into the fictional game mechanic, it also managed to put a very high price in "losing" without falling to the usual "you die in game you die in reallife" niche.
The major fights are really well executed, often time the main character have to rely on tactics and strategies instead of raw power. A great movie that show that after math of the original TV series, plus it also show life of Nadesico's crew after the war is over. I do wish they will spend more times progressing the plot instead of showing the daily life of every characters, I guess they were planning to have more than one movie.
It is very unfortunate that the story is unfinished, there won't be any sequel to conclude the story. There were 2 dreamcast games that kind of follow the story after the movie, but it barely moved the plot, and it ended in another cliffhanger. As a big Nadesico fan, I ... |
